  1. The Hawaiian People By: Emma Rourke Greenwood/3 Presentation January 11th, 2009

  2. Hawaii’s heritage is one of the most diverse in the world, due to the fact that it is a melting-pot of the Pacific.

  3. Local heritage in Hawaii encompasses people from Samoa, Tahiti, Japan, China, the Philippines, Korea, New Zealand, Portugal, Great Britain, and North America.

  4. It is believed that voyagers from Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa migrated to Hawaii around 400 A.D. They traveled across the Pacific in wooden canoes built with tools of stone, bone, and coral.

  5. These early settlers must have expert seafarers who could navigate by the stars and patterns of nature. The passage from Tahiti to Hawaii is approximately 2,000 miles.

  6. The early people of Polynesia came from an ancestral group that was comprised of fishermen and farmers. Scholars believe that the earliest settlers to Hawaii probably came from Hiva, which is now called the Marquesas.

  7. The European influence in Hawaiian heritage and culture stems largely from the Protestant and Catholic missionaries who arrived in Hawaii in the 1820’s and 1830’s to teach Christianity. English, Spanish and Portuguese explorers also visited Hawaii on their way to China in the 1770’s; Captain Cook is the most famous of these explorers.

  8. The considerable Japanese and Chinese influence in Hawaii is a result of immigrant plantation workers from Japan and China who arrived in Hawaii in the 1860’s and 1870’s. Pineapples and sugarcane were their primary crops.

  9. Today, Hawaiians enjoy a heritage that combines modern life and ancient traditions. Hawaii is a modern culture with large cities, international corporations, and intense tourism. However, it is also a culture that values its past and its ancient traditions. Some Hawaiian traditions that persist today include aina (respect for the land), ohana (dedication to family), hula ( storytelling through dance), and the Hawaiian language, which is still spoken fluently in many Hawaiian families. Hawaii is the only place in the world where Hawaiian is spoken.

  10. Although Hawaiians have a very diverse cultural background, they all consider themselves Americans as well. Hawaii became the 50th United State on August 21, 1959.

  11. Famous Hawaiians, past and present, include: King Kamehameha (1810 ruler), King Kalakaua (1887 ruler), Sanford B. Dole (1890’s plantation owner), Queen Liliuokalani ( Hawaii’s only ruling queen), Duke Kahanamoku (1912 Olympian and surfer), Daniel Inouye (senator), Carolyn Sapp (1st Hawaiian Miss America), Barack Obama (president).
