  2. Life On Mars Plot/Story http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/ondemand/lifeonmars/realmedia/best?bgc=000000&nbram=1&lang=en&nbwm=1&bbram=1&ms3=6&ms_javascript=true&bbcws=1&size=16x9&bbwm=1# Life on Mars tells the story of Sam Tyler, a police officer in service with the Greater Manchester Police. After being hit by a car in 2006, Tyler awakes in 1973 and finds himself working for the predecessor of the GMP, the Manchester and Salford Police at the same station and location as in 2006. Early on in the series, it becomes apparent to Tyler that he awakes as a Detective Inspector, one rank lower than his 2006 rank of Detective Chief Inspector. As part of the Criminal Investigation Department, Tyler finds himself working under the command of Gene Hunt. Throughout the two series, the central plot centres on the ambiguity concerning Tyler's predicament of it being unclear to both the audience and the character whether he has died, gone mad, is in a coma or has actually travelled back in time.

  3. Industry • The broadcaster of life on mars is Kudos (film & Television) Formed in 1992 it is a British independent film and television production company. It has produced television series for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, here are a few examples of what other things they have produced: • Spooks • Hustle • Life on Mars • Ashes to Ashes It was directed by Bharat Nalluri, John McKay, SJ Clarkson & John Alexander & produced by Claire Parker with executive producers Jane Featherstone & Matthew Graham When it was original aired in 2006 it was on prime time TV 9 o’clock on Monday nights on BBC one it ran from the 9 January 2006 – 10 April 2007, and there was 16 episodes one shown a week each episode was an hour long. The main writer of the series was Chris Chibnall it was co created by Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan & Ashley Pharaoh

  4. Conventions: Characters • These are the five main characters in the series: • Sam Tyler – DCI (2006) DI(1973)Tyler is hit by a car in 2006 and wakes up in 1973 • DCI Gene Hunt – he leads the team he is a hot headed DCI who looks pretty brutal at times and believes in old school policing has a love hate relationship with Sam • Annie Cartwright – she is a women police constable who becomes Sam Tyler's love interest & helps him come to • Chris Skelton- DC/PC he's a dogsbody Throughout the series of Life on Mars, Skelton finds himself torn between the old and the new ways policing • Ray Carling –Dc/DS/DI "right-hand man when it comes to fighting, shooting, gambling and the ladies".

  5. Conventions: Narrative DCI Sam Tyler is distressed after finding his colleague dead tailing a case, He steps out of his car, and is knocked down by another vehicle, he shuts his eyes and wakes up in 1973 in the exact same spot. He thinks it’s a big joke, but Gene Hunt soon sorts him out, is he in a coma, mad or is he back in time?

  6. Conventions: Mise en scene • COSTUMES: • 1970’s style clothing to make it look more authentic • Two main DC’s are wearing shirts, Ties & blazers • Sam Tyler is wearing smart clothing in the future and awakes to a flared shirt leather jacket and jeans • Gene Hunt is wearing a tie which is lose on a unbuttoned shirt maybe to show his character being laid back • Anna is dressed in standard police uniform back in the 1970’s • Present day clothing to show the contrast between the to decades • LOCATION: After being hit by a car in 2006, Tyler awakes in 1973 and finds himself working for the predecessor of the GMP, the Manchester and Salford Police at the same station and location as in 2006. • SETS: • The Salford Police station both in the 1973 & present time • Motorway side road • Construction site • Unknown Street • LIGHTING: • It uses a mixture of natural light and fake lighting to show the atmosphere • The police station is much more dingy with the lights being damped which could show what kind of people will be there

  7. Conventions: Mise en scene • SOUND: • David Bowie – Life on Mars song playing through the opening sequence to coincide with the name of the show and the 1970’s almost as a warning • Car screeching past • car crash • Heart beating • Ambulance siren • Voices “where are you”

  8. Conventions: Mise en scene • As it is on at Prime time TV I think it will appeal to both a male & female audience, due to the nature of the show It would not be suitable for children up to 12 as the language used and the nature of the show it’s self. It may also appeal to an older audience who lived through the 1970’s as they can relate to the show more, also any interested in cop dramas. • I think it will shape some views as some of the things that happen in the show really happened so peoples views could be interpreted through them.
