Aviation Test Battery (Vienna Test System)

Ability Testing for

Aviation Industry Trainees

aviation test battery atbs
Aviation Test Battery (ATBs)
  • Introduction to the ATBs
  • computer based system comprising 4 psychological tests, researched & developed specifically to assess pilot capabilities
  • assesses co-ordination, perception, mental abilities , & personal style attributes that are associated with efficient & safe aircraft operation
  • identifies poor, adequate and advanced capabilities in aviation trainees
  • The following slides provide more information on the tests
atbs trainee pilot subset
ATBs: Trainee Pilot Subset

Ability to respond to visual and auditory signals, using co-ordinated and simultaneous multi-limb responses

Multi-limb Co-ordination

Logical Reasoning

Ability to apply logic to verbal, mathematical or other abstract data

Aptitude for pilot training including motivation, persistence, communication, stress resilience & emotional stability

Personality

Assessment

Comprehension of spatial relationships & orientation between the plane, the ground & the aerospace environment

Pilot Spatial Abilities

The following slides explain in more detail each test & the relevance for pilot training

logical reasoning adaptive matrices test
Logical Reasoning (Adaptive Matrices Test)

Example pilot activities

  • learning through observation & critical thinking
  • reasoning using logical rule sets
  • decision making capacity
multi limb c o ordination determination test aircrew selection
Multi-limb co-ordination (Determination Test Aircrew Selection)

Example pilot activities

  • applying breaks or increasing acceleration on a signal
  • responding to information from multiple instruments
  • regaining composure & work rhythm after a stressful event
advanced pilot spatial abilities pilot spatial test
Advanced Pilot Spatial Abilities (Pilot Spatial Test)

Example pilot activities

  • maintaining a flight path in relation to the horizon
  • visualizing changes in orientation caused by steering
  • mental perception of plane positioning in 3D space
personality factors eysenck personality profiler
Personality Factors (Eysenck Personality Profiler)

Example pilot activities

  • personal drive & motivation to undertake training
  • communication & teamwork in the cockpit
  • ability to cope with both stressful & tedious activities
  • personal flexibility & mental hardiness
