  1. Proton Drivers Keith Gollwitzer Accelerator Division Fermilab IDS-NF 9thPlenary Meeting Oct 8-10, 2012

  2. Outline • Proton Drivers Summary • Information & slides taken from recent presentations at workshop & conferences • Recent Project X news • Staging • Final Focus Beam Line comments Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  3. Proton Driver Options Two schemes Three sites – All upgrades RAL – ISIS CERN – SPL FNAL – Project X Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  4. Build upon ISIS Upgrade • An upgrade to ISIS • Upgrade existing Linac • New Booster synchrotron • 3.3 GeV • New Linac to directly inject to Booster synchrotron • Multi-MW possible • Requires a 2nd RCS for NF Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  5. Sharing ISIS • Based on MW ISIS upgrade • with 800MeV Linac and 3.2 • (≈ 3.3) GeV RCS • Assumes a sharing of the beam • power at 3.2 GeV between the • two facilities • Both facilities can have the • same ion source, RFQ, chopper, • linac, H− injection, accumulation • and acceleration to 3.2 GeV • Requires additional • RCS machine in • order to meet • thepower • and energy • needs of the • Neutrino Factory • Options for the bunch compression to 1 – 3 ns RMS bunch length: • - adiabatic compression in the RCS • - ‘fast phase rotation’ in the RCS • - ‘fast phase rotation’ in a dedicated compressor ring Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  6. ISIS 2nd RCS Parameters of 3.2 – 9.6 GeV RCS Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  7. Build upon SPL Upgrade • Rebuilding of the injector train for the CERN program • Start with Low Power version of SPL to fulfill needs of current CERN program • Upgrade SPL to High Power • 4 MW at 5 GeV • Requires Accumulator and Compressor rings Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  8. SPL to Proton Driver Future Present LP-SPL: Low Power-Superconducting Proton Linac (4 GeV) Proton flux / Beam power HP-SPL: Upgrade of infrastructure (cooling water, electricity, cryogenics etc.) Replacement of klystron power supplies Addition of 5 high bcryomodules to accelerate up to 5 GeV 50 MeV Linac2 Linac4 160 MeV PSB LP-SPL 1.4 GeV 4 GeV PS 26 GeV PS2 50 GeV Main requirements of PS2 on its injector: Output energy SPS 450 GeV LHC / sLHC 7 TeV Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  9. New Rings • Accumulation of beam from the High Power SPL in a fixed energy Accumulator (5 GeV, 4MW beam power). • Bunch compression («rotation») in a separate Compressor ring Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  10. Build upon Project X • Upgrade Project X • 4 MW at 8 GeV • Increase particles per linac bunch • Increase pulsed linac duty factor • Repackage linac beam for ~50 Hz delivery • Accumulator Ring • Collect linac beam into bunches • Compressor Ring • Narrow bunches to <= 3 ns • Single Bunch Transfer/Extraction Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  11. Project X - NF Layout Accumulator Ring 4MW Target Compressor Ring ?? ?? ?? Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  12. Proton Driver Upgrades Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  13. Proton Driver Concerns • Stripping • Accumulation of protons from Hminus linac beam • Handling of unconverted beam • Intense particle bunches • Instabilities? • Example of look at longitudinal V. Lebedev: maximum power per bunch Final Bunch Parameters (Compressor Ring) Initial Ring Bunch Parameters (Accumulator Ring) Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  14. Project X (old) News • US DOE recognizes Project X (source, CW Linac, 3 GeV experimental area, Pulsed Linac, Main Injector/Recycler modifications) is too expensive. • Asked to stage Project X with compelling physics at each stage Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  15. Desired Project X Siting 3 GeV CW Linac 3 GeV Experiments 8 GeV Transfer Line 3-8 GeV PulsedLinac Tevatron Tunnel Main Injector & Recycler Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  16. Add Rings Possible Compressor Locations Accumulator Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  17. Possible Staging Cartoon Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  18. Add Rings... Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting

  19. Final Focus Beam Line • Deliver beam from last ring to target • Issues • Collimation ? • Connection to target area is at “angle” since will need to have helical orbit in solenoid • Last magnetic element location with respect to the target infrastructure • Window(s) • Beam vacuum separated from Mercury containment Gollwitzer -- 9th IDS-NF Meeting
