  1. Looking for a Job? Great Jobs and Challenging Careers Exist in the Petroleum Industry…

  2. Why jobs exist… … “relatively few oil and gas extraction workers are in their teens or early 20’s. Over 65% of the workers in this industry are between 35 to 54 years of age. On average 40% of the industry’s workforce is expected to reach retirement during this decade.” Aging Workforce • Human Resources: The Missing Piece of the Energy Puzzle • Dr. William L. Fisher and Sarah J. Seals • Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission p. 5

  3. Who will fill the jobs… Diversity Employers will need to develop … “practices to attract and train applicants from non-traditional employment groups (women, urban youth, immigrants and Aboriginal people) to address the supply issue.” The Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada www.petrohrsc.ca Newfoundland and Labrador Local stakeholders view diversity as an important piece of the puzzle. Husky Energy leads by example and has filed a diversity plan for the White Rose project.

  13. Bigger Picture - challenges findingexperienced employees… East Coast • Small industry – few projects compared to North Sea • Lack of “offshore” experience • North Atlantic working environment • Worker’s mobility concerns • family considerations • high tax rates • competitiveness of compensation • remoteness

  14. Roughneck How companies recruit people… • 1st - Recruit at the entry level • 2nd - Train internally; develop skills required to move through a career path • 3rd - Promote through internal Career Progression programs • An example • of a • Career Path: Career Progression – Directional Driller - Directional Driller Driller LWD Specialist MWD Specialist Entry Level: MWD Specialist Assistant Driller Technologist Diploma Mud Logging Derrickman Data Technician Asst.Derrickman Mud Logger Sample Catcher Roughneck Roughneck Roughneck Entry Level: Sample Catcher Entry Level: Geology Undergraduate Post Secondary courses

  15. Schools do a good job… • Local, post secondary institutions are preparing graduates well for entry level positions • Train youth from traditional and non-traditional employment groups • Schools recognize that enhanced technology has increased entry level qualifications required for some offshore positions • Drilling and Well Services – smart well technology required in remote/harsh environments • Schools form partnerships with industry • Promote career opportunities Provide student employment assistance • Recruit faculty with diverse experience • Secure targeted research funds • Expose students to leading edge technology • Secure grants to provide top notch facilities • Create new programs e.g., Master’s in Oil/Gas Studies

  16. Industry cooperates with schools … • Reviews curriculum to ensure it meets industry needs • Shares leading edge technology and services • Makes donations • Halliburton’s Landmark Graphics division $18.4 million grant to MUN • Grants scholarships • Supports diversity programs • Provides work-term placements • Hires students from traditional and non-traditional employment groups
