  1. Judaism Copy the following definitions: Torah-Judaism’s most sacred text: first 5 books of the Hebrew Bible. Israelite- an early name for the Jewish people. Covenant- an agreement or promise Ten Commandments- ten laws and teachings said to be given to Moses by God Exodus- The escape of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom.

  2. Judaism Passport Page • Vocabulary: Torah, Israelite, Ten commandments, Exodus, Covenant and define them on your page. • List the founder /leader (clergy)of the religion. • List three facts about their beliefs • List the location of Origin. • Draw the symbol that represents Judaism.

  3. Abraham is often called the “father of the Jews.” According to the Torah, it was Abraham who introduced the belief in one single God to the Israelites. This was a new idea in the ancient world. At that time, most people worshiped many gods and goddesses. Moses- The Torah tells how God gave Moses Ten Commandments engraved on two stone tablets. These teachings became the foundation of Judaism. The Torah tells how Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt (Exodus).

  7. Buddha’s Teachings (copy into Notebook) • Buddha shared his discovery of the Four Noble Truths about the state of suffering and ways to end it. He believed that people could reach enlightenment by living according to the teachings of the eightfold path. • Four noble truths- the four basic doctrines, or principles, of Buddhism. • Eightfold path- A key idea that Buddhist followers should live their lives according to eight teachings.

Buddhism is the religion founded by Siddhartha, which teaches that life brings suffering that one can escape by seeking enlightenment through nirvana.

Confucianism (a Chinese philosophy) Read about the following terms and summarize their meaning (use pg R50 of green book): • Temple- • Confucius- • Confucianism- A Chinese philosophy that emphasizes proper behavior. • The teachings of Confucius had a major influence on Chinese culture. Values such as respect for elders, proper behavior, and love of scholarship became deeply woven into Chinese society. • The sayings of Confucius are wise and practical.

  17. Dome of the Rock- One of Islam’s holiest sites located in Jerusalem. Muslim prayer- 5 times a day, Muslims face toward Mecca to pray. They stop what they are doing when called to prayer. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Qur’an is the spiritual guide for Muslims.

Christianity Vocabulary • Christianity- The religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus. • Jesus- The founder of Christianity upon whose life and teachings the religion is based. • Messiah- A savior who many Jews believe had been promised to them by God. • Gospel- an account of the life and teachings of Jesus; four of them are included in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. • Disciple- A person who helps spread the religious teachings of another.
