Phase One nearing completion • Shield walls complete and painted • All mezzanines & galleries are complete • False floor making good progress • All fabrication is complete and delivered • Installation in Hall is about 30% done – a few minor hold-ups with drilling the floor • Aim to complete early January (not critical path) • Rolling platforms 1 & 7 are complete, tested and delivered • Smoke detection, lighting upgrade and fire alarms delayed, regrettable, but not critical • Work is currently under tender by BPG • Hope to get started in January • Main door replacement crucial for PPS installation • ISIS have reservations – urgently need to understand! • Two RF amplifiers are on their way from CERN to DL NFMCC Friday Meeting

MICE Beamline Quadrupoles Target • Leaking quadrupoles fixed • Quadrupoles seem fine after many problems in October BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

MICE Beamline Target Decay Solenoid • Cooldown and fault analysis ongoing • All 10 coils appear to be superconducting • Problem with quench protection circuitry • Shutdown plan: • Continue cooling and diagnosis over Christmas • Train “semi-experts” and work with ISIS crew • Cold mass removal to proceed and planned BM2 BM1 Decay Solenoid CKOV A,B Target: Titanium paddle dipped into ISIS proton beam to produce pions Decay Solenoid: Focuses muon beam coming from pion decay BM1, BM2: scintillating fiber beamline monitors GVA1, GVA2: scintillating paddle beamline monitors NFMCC Friday Meeting

TOF I (2nd set) Installation • Installation from Dec. 9 – 12 great milestone for MICE Step I • Initial data taken; more needed • Limited debugging with electron, pion beams; need muon beam for full debugging • Cable length calibration, time offset determinations underway • Would like DAQ readout • TOF 0 and TOF 1 • Calorimeter • 2 taggers behind calorimeter NFMCC Friday Meeting

TOF2 status TOF2 counters assembled, but not still wrapped out TOF2 PMTs under repair at Hamamatsu: delivery expected by mid January 09 ARMCO steel for local PMTs shielding procured at CERN and now in house final design of KL+TOF2 trolley under way final design of TOF2 mechanics + local shielding done M.   8. Other MICE News • Calorimeter working fine • Tracker cassette characterization done at FNAL • Next steps: • Test spare boards • Test and run full tracker 2 readout system • Ship to RAL, aiming for late January NFMCC Friday Meeting

  9. Spectrometer Update • A few problems found, understood, caused about couple week delay • Shipment to FNAL likely around late January • After setup, start magnetic field mapping (Ben Freemire’s talk) NFMCC Friday Meeting
