Flourish Become numerous To disable from further resistance/division

  4. Revelation 1:4 • 4John,       To the seven churches in the province of Asia:    Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, Eirene

  5. Greek/Hebrew PEACE • Old Testament-Hebrew • Shalom • All dimensions of life • Tranquility • Safe • Well being • Health • Contentment • Integrity • Harmony with God, the earth, the animals, and the universe • New Testament-Greek • Eirene

  6. Old Testament/Priestly Benediction • Numbers 6:24-26 24 " ' "The LORD bless you        and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine upon you        and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you        and give you peace." ' • Psalm 34:14 14 Turn from evil and do good;        seek peace and pursue it

  7. Revelation 6:4 • 3When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" 4Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

  8. Matthew 10:32-42 • 32"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. • 34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. • 35For I have come to turn    " 'a man against his father,       a daughter against her mother,    a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'[e] • 37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

  9. Some crazy Observations • Hate family-Love God • Look—see the Lion of Judah—looks and sees a Sacrificed, bloodied Lamb • Look—see the 144,000 Jews and the Jewish nation---looks and sees “people from every tongue, tribe, and nation.” • Peace brings a sword • Sword brings Peace again…

  10. the passive judgment of God • “I am allowing you to go your own way and to experience the futility of life without me.” How does God normally respond in this life when we don't want anything to do with him? He lets us go our own way in the hope that we will discover that all of our idols are empty, that we can't make life work without him (Romans 1:18ff.).

  11. the active judgment of God • “If you persist in your rebellion against me, I will reluctantly sentence you to eternal alienation from me.” But there is a finite time to change your mind about bowing to God. He will not allow us to run roughshod over his universe forever. There will come a day when God will enforce forever what we have chosen in this life. (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

  12. God's redemptive activity in your life • “I love you and I am inviting you to come to me through Jesus.” Even as he lets you go, God is hoping that you will come to your senses and come to him. And he makes it clear that no matter how much you may have rebelled against him, he is ready to forgive you and indwell you and transform your life. This is why he sends his people to share with you, pray for you, invite you to meetings like this, etc. (John 3:16). What are you going to do with God's invitation?

  13. We have to go back to God’s original plan • We have a problem….we cannot administer Peace on our own. • We HAVE to pursue the Prince of Peace who makes it possible to “subdue” his Kingdom. • Remember “subdue” means to disable from further resistance…to establish shalom again.

  14. Matthew 5:9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.James 3:18Peacemakerswho sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

  15. Acts 8:9-13 Simon the Magician • Acts 16:13-15 Lydia • Acts 7:54-59 The Apostle Paul • Three extremes that were affected by grace, peace, and love of Jesus. • Love enemies. Do good to those who persecute you…in doing so, you are “subduing”—bringing peace to God’s Kingdom on earth.
