  1. Welcome to the Communications Center Fall 2014 Operating Hours: Mon. – Thurs. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Telephone: (407) 582-1812

  2. The Communications Center • is an academic environment where students are expected to be focused on learning. • Turn cell phones off or on “silent mode” • No food allowed. • Children are NOT allowed. • Please help us keep a positive learning environment for all students! SILENT

  3. Communications Center Staff • Instructors/Faculty Professors • Provide in-depth help with assignments. • Offer extensive teaching experience. • Student Assistants • Help with many routine questions. • Have EAP/Developmental class experience.

  4. The Main Lab • Currently enrolled English (ENC), Speech (SPC), Reading (REA), Writing (ENC) or EAP students. • Students must be logged-in with their own Valencia ID number • 108 Computers with interactive programs, headphones & tutorials You will need your Valencia card # in order to log into a computer; ID cards may be obtained in 3-147 or ask for assistance.

  5. Copiers & Printers • Copiers available in library • Printing available in all labs • 10 cents per page • Print cards are available in the Communication Center (5-155), Library (bldg. 6) and the Math Lab (7-240)

  6. Important-Do Not Lose Your Work! • Save all work to a USB/Flash Drive • All files saved to lab computers will be deleted when the system is restarted.

  7. The Main Lab – Materials Desk • Workbooks, textbook copies, practice exams, and quizzes available at the Materials Desk. • Checked out to your Valencia ID number • Must be returned before leaving • Library fines charged for lost/late items

  8. EAP/Foreign Languages Lab • Reserved for EAP Speech and Foreign Language students (EAP0281, 0300, 0400, 1500) • A quiet area to work on your labs or assignments. • Specialized equipment for listening to and recording speech

  9. Speech/Video Room • Computer, television, and camera available to record or practice speeches. • You may book room for speech and/or to work together as a group. • Instructors and staff in lab ready to assist you!

  10. Fall 2014 Main Writing Center Hours: Monday – Thursday: 8am-8pm Friday: 8am-5pm Saturday: 9am-2pm Mobile Writing Center (Group Study Area of Library) Monday-Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm -First come, first served -Walk-up consultations

Help is available to all Valencia students from all courses and disciplines college-wide. • Appointments are required. • 1/day, 3/week • 30 minutes long (60 minutes for research papers) • “no-show” appointments may be given to waiting students after five minutes • Students with repeated no-shows will lose the use of the Writing Center. NOTE: You MUST have your VID card in order to make an appointment!

  12. Come prepared! • Bring a clean, printed copy of your work. • Bring a copy of the assignment, if possible. • Instructors will: • Identify and review problem areas. • Offer one-on-one lessons on weak skills. • Send a summary to classroom instructor. • Instructors will NOT: • Proofread or grade papers.

Benefits Recap • All students may receive ASSISTANCE with assignments • Computers AVAILABLE with internet access and interactive learning software • INSTRUCTORS to assist you with assignments or classes. • WRITING CENTERtutors to work with improving your essays for any college class • Floor Assistants to offer help with software, Atlas, Blackboard, or other computer issues as needed • WORKSHOPS given throughout the semester on various academic skills
