The Powerful Impact of Emotional States on Health: A Study in Psychoneuroimmunology

This study explores how different emotional states, such as compassion and anger, influence physiological and psychological health. Involving 30 subjects trained in stress management, the research measured changes in secretory IgA levels, mood, and symptoms after a brief period of focused emotional induction. Findings indicate statistically significant effects, with emotional intensity quantified through a mood score. The results suggest that cultivating positive emotions can enhance well-being, while negative emotions may have detrimental effects.

  2. changes in S-IgA, mood & symptoms values marked with a * are all statistically significant total mood score was calculated by multiplying emotional intensity (0=very weak; 10=very strong) by the % of time during the 5 minute exercise that the emotion was felt - the mean score in a preliminary study was 510 +/- 251.
