What is Communities of Recovery Lanarkshire? • Peer support for people recovering from drug and alcohol misuse • We match trained volunteer peer mentors with individuals in earlier stages of recovery • They provide emotional and practical support in the community
Service Vision • The service supports the transition from mainstream services • It compliments current services and helps to sustain recovery journeys • Promotes family and community involvement • Enhancing skills and self esteem • Challenging stigma and discrimination • Showing that recovery is possible
Mentees • Open referral system • Assessment • Care Plan/Review • Identified Mentor • Support with community engagement/increased Recovery Capital • Phone support out with office hours
What are volunteer peer mentors? • Mentors help their mentee to integrate into the local community • Help them to build a full life in the community • They use their own experience of recovery to provide guidance to someone at the earlier stages of recovery
What do you need to be a volunteer peer mentor? • Someone with direct or indirect experience of recovery • Passionate about recovery • Great listening and motivational skills • Willing to commit to between 2-10 hours of mentoring per week.
Stage 1 volunteers • Volunteers complete a 5 week training course before they begin mentoring • Induction to Phoenix Futures • Overdose Awareness • Blood Bourne Virus’ • safeTALK • Communication
Stage 2 volunteers • Expected to carry out 2-10 hours of mentoring per week • Further training sessions • Opportunity to complete accredited qualifications- OCN in Peer mentoring, John Muir Awards, SMART facillitation, OCN in Practical Conservation and Preparation for Work Stage 3 volunteers • Increased mentoring hours • Involvement in promoting the service and attending community events
What do you gain from volunteering? • Building skillset • Building confidence • Support from supervisor to access employment and training • Using your experience of recovery to help others
