  1. Modeling and Simulation - Northeast:Focusing on Medical Simulation Steve Dawson, MD Massachusetts General Hospital Boston, Chairman, AIMS Advanced Initiative in Medical Simulation sdawson@partners.org

  2. Regional Drivers - Support Structures • Very early site of Medical M&S activities • Local environment: • Harvard Medical • Boston University Medical • Tufts Medical Schools • MIT • World renowned medical centers Medical M&S - Northeast

  3. Local Factors • High need for training • High patient volumes • Technologically advanced medical care • Innovated • Advanced • (Savvy, litigious population) Medical M&S - Northeast

  4. Successes to date1994-2009 • Early centralized, cooperative efforts successful • Spin off centers at AMCs • Redundant training goals • Turf issues feed excess spending • “Train the trainers” efforts highly successful at single site • becomes national resource • R&D efforts at one site expand umbrella of medical M&S nationally Medical M&S - Northeast

  5. Proof of effectiveness1996-2008 • Among all simulation-trained specialists at the dominant healthcare system • Major obstetric complications down >25% • Anesthesia errors down >17% • Malpractice insurance rates down Major Challenge: How to transfer this success to national stage? Medical M&S - Northeast

  6. Federal benefits/interests • Proven national leaders as a resource • Encourage “smart” development into areas outside existing uses • Proven patient safety, verified by actuarial analysis • Establish Centers of Excellence • Spread these tools beyond major centers Medical M&S - Northeast

  7. Industrial Challenge • There are > 32 million operations / yr in U.S. • There are > 70,000 surgeons in the U.S. • Insurers give premium offsets for simulation • There are national mandates for simulation training Who wants to step up to meet this underserved mandated market? Medical M&S - Northeast

  8. Medical M&S NATIONAL Congressional M&S Caucus support H.R. 4321 - 110th Congress Rep Forbes, Rep Kennedy March 17-18, 2009 Washington, DC www.medsim.org sdawson@partners.org
