WRITING Instructional Focus: • Common Core Georgia Performance Standards • Writer’s Workshop • Each student will use the writing process to write from his/her experiences and interests Topics:personal narrative, informational, persuasive, realistic fiction narrative & response to literature *My goal is to create authors not just students who can write.

Language Arts Assessments and Performance Tasks • Types of Assessments in Literacy include: Diagnostic Reading Assessment Cold Reads Word Work Response to Literature Observation/Conferences Performance Tasks Sample 2nd grade performance task - Students read fables and folktales from diverse cultures that represent various origin tales, such as Rudyard Kipling’s How the Camel Got His Hump and Natalie Babbitt’s The Search for Delicious, and paraphrase their central message, lesson, or moral. [RL.2.2] • You will not see the typical “end of story” tests in reading.

Home Access Center • If you have not previously enrolled in Home Access Center (HAC), please stop by the office between 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM Monday-Friday to complete the forms to allow you to do so. • HAC will give you information regarding your children’s attendance and grades. • You will need to be enrolled in HAC in order to vote for the School Governance Council later this year. • HAC is accessed through the Parents Portal at http://www.fultonschools.org.

18. Class Work Procedure Late work and missing work will be recorded as incomplete, rather than zero. An opportunity will be provided to complete the work.

Homework • FCBOE homework policy: second graders will have 20-30 minutes of homework • Language Arts assignment packet • given to each student on Monday • return to school on Friday • Math homework: • assignments given by the math teacher • to be completed and returned the next day • Homework • on time- 100%. • one day late- 90% • two days late-80% • three or more days late-70% • *Focus for home

20. What can you do at home? • Read with your child 20 minutes a night. • Practice finding the meaning of unknown words through context clues. • Review previous spelling patterns. • Practice addition and subtraction facts.
