  1. WHO ARE WE? • The Neurotoxicology Specialty Section (NTSS) consists of SOT members who are interested in the adverse effects of chemical, biological or physical agents on the structure and function of the nervous system. NTSS members have research, regulatory and/or industrial interests in the field of neurotoxicology as it relates to environmental chemicals and pharmaceuticals. • The major aim of the NTSS is to promote the exhange of information among neurotoxicologists through: • Business meetings and reception at the annual SOT meeting • Sponsorship of student and post-doctoral awards • Sponsorship of sessions and workshops at the annual SOT meeting • Communication via the internet including job openings and conference announcements SOT/American Chemistry Council Early Award for Neurotoxicology The Society of Toxicology/American Chemistry Council Early Award in Neurotoxicology of up to $100,000 is designed to encourage persons beginning their professional careers to conduct research that will improve the scientific basis for risk assessment and decision-making with respect to the potential neurotoxicity of chemicals. Past Winners from NTSS: 2002 Ronald Tjalkens 2004 Nikolay Filipov • STUDENT AWARDS • The Neurotoxicology Specialty Section sponsors both student and postdoctoral level research awards for students who present outstanding research at the national meeting • Submission requirements: • An extended abstract • A letter of support from your advisor • Send a copy of your poster shortly before annual meeting to the NTSS to facilitate the judging • Students should be members of NTSS or show evidence of application for membership • Mentors who are not members are strongly encouraged to join the NTSS • Awards: • $500 for 1st, $300 for 2nd, and $150 for 3rd place winners • Presentation of an engraved plaque • Recognition among your peers • BEST ABSTRACT AWARD • The Neurotoxicology Specialty Section also sponsors an award for best abstract open to all NTSS members presenting at the annual SOT meeting. Members gather annually at the NTSS reception at SOT, where they have an opportunity for informal interactions with friends, colleagues, funding source reps • Reinforcementof the importance of research in Neurotoxicology to funding agencies, regulatory agencies, and the scientific community.
