Die regelmäßigen Verben. In German, we learn verbs in their infinitive forms. The infinitive form = to + action word. ex. to buy, to need, to take. In German, verb infinitives end in “en”. We do not use the verbs in their infinitive forms---we conjugate them.

  • The infinitive form = to + action word.

  • We do not use the verbs in their infinitive forms---we conjugate them.

There are 2 parts to every verb:

the stem and the ending

  • The stem tells what activity is happening.
  • The ending tells who is doing the activity.

  • 1. Drop “en” to form stem.
  • 2. Use stem and add the following

endings.

Du, ihr, and Sie can all be translated as “you”.
  • Du is you familiar—family and friends
  • Ihr is you plural—you all
  • Sie is you formal—for adults and strangers
  • Man is an indefinite pronoun meaning “one”.

  • When a verb stem ends in –s, -ss,
  • -ß, -z, or –tz, the “s” in the second person singular is dropped.

When the stem of a verb ends in –t or –d, an e is inserted between the stem and the ending in second and third person singular and second person plural.
