Cambodian society was destroyed in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by genocide and decades of civil war. Western governments, like Britain and America, actively worked to keep the war going, leaving the country devastated and huge numbers of families living in poverty.
28.3% of Cambodians live on less than $1.25 (78p) (purchasing power parity) per day. Education has been so affected by the disruption and war that there are not enough teachers to go round. Schools work in shifts, and students have to pay their teachers for worksheets and marking.
