Basic terms • SPL - Sound pressure level • dB - Decibel. An exponential unit of measurement equaling 1/10th of a bell named after Alexander Graham Bell. • Sound waves - Sound radiates outwardly in a spherical pattern and is absorbed by the ear and recording devices as a wave. • Amplitude - volume. • Frequency - pitch.
Basic terms - continued • Velocity - sound travels through the air at 68˚F at approximately 1130 feet per second. The speed increases as the temperature rises. • Cycle - one complete excursion of a wave. • Period - The time required to complete one cycle.
Basic terms - continued • Hertz - A unit of measurement of the number of frequency cycles occurring in one second. • Compression - An area containing higher than normal sound pressure. • Rarefaction - An area containing lower than normal sound pressure.
