  1. Faculty Technical Advisor: Dr. Chu Team 32 Members: Caleb McGee, M.E. Dan Rogers, M.E. Dylan Sartin, M.E. Nick Sager, M.E. Ryan Schmidt (PM), M.E.

  2. Outline: • Overview- Ryan Schmidt • Block Diagram • Subsystems: • Frame- Dan Rogers • Drivetrain • Suspension- Nick Sager • Steering • Seating and Safety- Dylan Sartin • Timeline • Cost- Caleb McGee • Summary

  3. Executive Summary • Background • The 2013 Moonbuggy is designed to compete in the 20th annual NASA Great Moonbuggy Race • Human powered vehicle supporting two drivers • Must complete a 0.7 mile obstacle-based course simulating lunar terrain features • Deliverables • Fully Functional moonbuggy that meets NASA competition, design, and safety criteria • Design report detailing the 2013 design, analysis, and research. • Responsibilities • Project Management: Ryan Schmidt • Frame: Caleb McGee • Suspension: Ryan Schmidt • Steering: Nick Sager • Drive Train: Dan Rogers • Ergonomics: Dylan Sartin • Resources • Cost of parts: $6,790.00

  4. Block Diagram

  5. frame • Frame Rails • 3 rail frame for greater rigidity over single rail designs • 4130 chromoly steel • ¾” O.D. 0.049” wall thickness • Folding • Single pin hinge • Dual latches • Layback • 10° of layback on the front frame • Directs aft forces into suspension travel

  6. drivetrain • 4 Wheel Drive • Front driver powers the front wheels • Rear driver powers the rear wheels • Both drivers have Hammer-Schmidt transmissions • The Hammer-Schmidts have a system of planetary gears contained within the sealed housing which yields either a 1:1 or a 1.6:1 overdrive gear ratio. • 200 (ft•lb) • $730 each

  7. Drivetrain • Tricycle style differential • Drive gear bound together by 2 BMX freewheels • ¾” spline shaft • 1.25” U-Joints

  8. Suspension • Independent double wishbone suspension • Non parallel, unequal length • Pushrod activated shock absorbers • 7 inches of travel • Optimized geometry for steering and handling stability

  9. Steering • Under Seat Steering • Space Saving • The moonbuggy must fit into a 4’ cube or suffer a 2 minute penalty • Adaptable • Can have a center steering system incorporated into it • Easy to Use Circled is the under seat steering system on a recumbent bicycle

  10. Seating and safety • Ergonomic Seats • Recumbent style • Body Restraints • Roll Bars • Extend over the passenger’s heads

  11. Timeline

  12. Cost Proposal • Frame: $500.00 • Drivetrain: $4,315.00 • Suspension: $1,250.00 • Steering: $375.00 • Seating: $350.00 • Total: $6,790.00

  13. Summary • Goal • Build a human powered vehicle to compete at NASA’s Great MoonbuggyRace, April 25th 2013 • Vehicle Features • Four wheel drive • High travel suspension • New safety features • Light weight
