  2. 1. What problem(s) does the initiative seek to address? WonaSanana Zizile Save the Children • Weak knowledge about models and alternatives of ECD that increase access and quality of ECD; • - Only 4% of preschool children have access to ECD services. - Lack of a national policy of ECD; - Lack of a shared vision on ECD; - Little involvement of parents on ECD. • Weak development of language competencies in preschool children; • Problems of nutition on pregnant mothers and children under 3 years; • - Sustainabilityof ECD projects.

How has the initiative been implemented? • Wona Sanana • Involvementofleaderships • - Community Mobilization • - Building of community schools • - Training educators and ECD Committees Zizile - National meetings to promote a national vision on ECD - Network to advocate for a national vision policy on ECD Save the Children - Training of educators, teachers and parents - Creation of savings groups Who and how • - Childrens; - Families; - Communities • Government • Academy institutions; • Local partners on ECD; • * Sharing knowledge and good local practices - Civil Society Organizations - Community Base Organizations - Government (Ministries) * Sharing knowledge and best practices * Promoting meetings to ensure and promote a national policy on ECD • Involvemmentof local leaderships , mobilizationofparents to participateactively in ECCD activities, and in savingsgroups. • Partnersofgovernmentatalllevels. • - 5.000 children of preschool and initial classes of primary education; • - 50 educators, 100 primaryteachers; • - 200 caregivers, 100 Parents; • 40 community leaders; • 6 Comunidades Target group - 50 CSOs - 20 CBOs - 50 Ministries’ representatives - 10 Academy institutions • - Children, parents/ caregivers Costs/resources USD 150.000,00 / year USD 50.000,00 USD 150.000,00 / year Period 3 years (2012-2014) - 1 year (2012) - 2 years (2013-2014)

  6. 4. Challenges and how have these been approached?

  7. 5. Successes, inspirations and possibilities? How are these being capitalized upon? • Sharing of training models/ materials/ community mobilization to increase ECD and good practices together with partners (Government, NGOs, CSOs, Academic Institutions); • Guidelines for institutions interested on ECD; • Sharing of models for production of pedagogic materials together with students; • Provision of professional internships; • Models and lessons are used to influence the discussions about ECD with government • Transition: reinforcement of good practices of teachers in initial grades; • Creation of savings groups (experience shared to other projects); - Sharing of documentation on ECDE; - Networking. How is all this measured a documented/captured - Measurement is carried out through monitoring and evaluation tools about each activity (questionnaires, informal conversations, interviews, observation) - Documentation through pictures, stories of success, reports and case studies.

Lessons learned, conclusions and recommendations - Increased movement and creativity on ECDE (more stakeholders and direct intervenient with initiatives); - Gradually understanding of ECDE, as one of the priority areas for development of a nation; - When motivated, the communities promote and develop sustainable programs for ECDE and based on available resources; - The involvement of partners at all levels can make the program a success, specially with full participation of children; - OSISA’s funds strengthened our efforts on ECDE. However we would like to recommend long period financing 3-4 Years to have the opportunity to evaluate the impact of the activities of OSISA financed programs.
