Levels of Probation • First semester on probation • Receive letters • Attend Learning Group • Earn 2.0 average for the semester • Second consecutive semester on probation • Opening Doors to Excellence program • Appeal Loss of Prioritized Registration • Third consecutive semester on probation • Dismissed from college for 1 semester • Or Appeal Dismissal • Readmission Contract Needed

Loss of Registration Priority Spring 2015 Student Success Act of 2012 (SB1456) • When grades post for the spring 2014 semester, students who advance to2nd level probation (potentially you!) will register afterall new and continuing students in good standing for spring 2015. • Students may appeal this action if they receive a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in the spring 2014 semester or have extenuating circumstances (hospitalization, death in the family, military redeployment). • Eligible students may appeal in early fall 2014 to regain prioritized registration for spring 2015. Go to the Counseling website in August 2014 to access appeals forms. www.chaffey.edu/counseling/index.shtml • Approved appeals are granted continuation of prioritized registration for only two additional semesters. • Students resume prioritized registration without limitation only after they regain good academic standing (2.0 cumulative GPA at Chaffey).

Possible reasons: • Health issues • Personal/family responsibilities • Financial/work obligations • Procrastination/time management issues • Course load too heavy/unevenly distributed • Inadequate study habits or foundational skills • College is not the priority at this time • Other?

  7. What Can I Do to Get Off Probation? Be Proactive • Identify the factors that have contributed to your current academic status • Manage your personal schedule: set aside class & study time, check deadlines/upcoming events • Communicate with Instructor: office hours/phone/e-mail • Visit Success Centers: tutoring, DLAs, workshops and learning groups • Take advantage of Supplemental Instruction and Student Support Services Check Progress Regularly

  8. What Can I Do to Get Off Probation? (cont.) Raise Cumulative GPA • Pass current & future classes with an A or B (C’s are neutral & will have no effect on raising your overall GPA) • Retake courses with substandard grades • Use Success Centers (tutoring, DLAs, workshops, learning groups, Success Guides) Meet with a Counselor • Review course caseload • Create Educational Plan (monitor regularly) • Check progress on goal • Link to resources

Goal Setting Set goals that are SMART • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Realistic • Timely A goal helps you identify a desired outcome you want to achieve and devise plans and strategies to accomplish it. Example: “My goal is to meet with a math tutor once a week and before every exam in order to pass the class with a B or better.”

  12. Time Management • Remember: Every unit represents 3 hrs. of outside study time • Prioritize • Plan, don’t procrastinate • Allow time for eating and sleeping well • Balance study time with free time

Effective Communication • Contact instructor e-mail office hours phone *Ask for clarification when needed *Track class progress *Get advise on current and future assignments. *Get missed class info. (If Necessary). • Develop a support system Share your stressors, concerns, and achievements withfamily, friends, and mentors

  15. Academic Success Contract • Please Initial • _____1. Repeat previous courses completed with substandard grades (D or F grades). • _____2. Meet with current instructors before or after class and/or during office hours to discuss progress towards earning a C or better grades in courses. • _____3. Earn a 2.0 average or better GPA in the current semester. • _____4. Meet with a Success Guide to explore academic support resources and evaluate progress on goal. • _____5. Consult a counselor prior to withdrawing from an enrolled course. • _____6. Enroll in Guidance 2 and/or 3 in the next semester to improve on study skills, time management, and/or explore career/major options (some students may enroll in Guidance 507 as part of participating in the Opening Doors to Excellence program). • _____7. I authorize Chaffey College Staff to text, email, or call me by phone to provide follow up communications and services. • I commit to implementing the above mentioned steps to regain good standing and make satisfactory progress towards achieving my educational goals. Furthermore, I understand that my lack of satisfactory progress will result in advancement to Level 2 probation for which I will lose prioritized registration and be at risk of being dismissed from Chaffey at the end of the subsequent semester.
