  4. Sidney Brown ruptured a kidney after tackling an Aberavon player and although he returned to the field of play, he died the next day. From what you have learnt about Sidney so far, what impressions have you formed of him?

  5. Write a front page news paper report about the death of Sidney Brown. Discuss what features you need to include in a newspaper report. What difference does it make that the article is on the front page?

  6. Opening Paragraph Where? There were scenes of celebration at the Kingsholm ground yesterday, as Gloucester outclassed visitors Bath in a match that finished 24 - 5. When? Who? What? The “HOW” and “WHY” come in the development part of the report.

Direct and Reported Speech • Newspaper reports often contain quotations from witnesses or experts. • When a reporter uses the exact words that a person has said, they use “quotation marks.” This is called direct speech. • Gloucester fan, Stuart Allen, said “I was at the match yesterday, you would never have realised he was seriously hurt. I’m devastated.” • When a reporter summarises something a person has said into their own words, they do not use quotation marks. This is called reported speech. • Brown’s doctor at the hospital confirmed that the cause of death was a ruptured kidney.
