  2. Scientific Names • 3species • scientific name all 3 species isTrichechus • 3 types of Manatees are: -West Indian Manatee- Trichechus manatus -West African Manatee-Trichechus Senegalensis -Amazonian Manatee-Trichechus Inunguis

  3. Habitat • West Indian manatees Any waterway over 1 m deep and connected to the coast. Water temperature above 70°F. • West African manatees Quiet coastal areas, large rivers, lagoons, and lakes. Water temperature above 64°F. • Amazonian manatee Freshwater. Common in floodplain lakes and channels. Water temperatures ranging from 77°-86°F.

  4. Range West indian manatees can be found in the West Indies, or Caribbean African manatees can be found in the western region of Africa Amazonian manatees are found in the Amazon basin. (Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Venezuela)

  5. Diet • herbivores • Submerged, emergent, floating, and shoreline vegetation • Can eat turtle grass, manatee grass, mangrove leaves, various algae, hydrilla, etc. • occasionally been seen to eat foods other than plants • consume about 4% to 9% of their body weight daily.

  6. Physical Description • Adult West Indian and West African manatees average about 9.8 feet • Average adult weigh about 800 to 1200 pounds • Females are usually larger than males • Amazonian manatees are the smallest of all three species, around 9.2 feet
