  9. Making Mom’s Birthday Cake Jenna is planning to surprise her mom by making a birthday cake. She heads to the store first to get all of the ingredients. When Jenna arrives at the store, she finds a parking spot close to the front. Good thing because it is 90°F, and she isn’t a fan of the heat. However, despite the close spot, she begins to sweat just from her walk to the entrance anyway. Once inside, she heads straight to the baking section, forgetting to take a cart. She grabs flour, sugar, vanilla, and frosting. Jenna also grabs a couple of other items and looks back at her list. All checked off! As she heads to the checkout counter, Jenna thinks to herself, “I better grab some ice cream, I’ll get mom’s favorite.” She grabs a half gallon of vanilla ice cream and carries her items to the cashier. Jenna’s arm is freezing where she was holding the ice cream. She pays for the items and heads back to her car. Still sweating from her errands, Jenna decides to take cold shower to cool off. Once she is ready, she begins to bake. She preheats the oven to 375°F then starts to measure each ingredient. “Shoot!” Jenna said to herself. She realized that the butter is still in the fridge, so it never softened. She puts it in the microwave for 10 seconds to try to soften it up a bit. Just as she pours the batter into the metal pan, the oven beeps to say it reached 375°F. Jenna opens the oven and feels a rush of hot air hit her face. She puts the metal pan on the hot metal rack and closes the oven door. Twenty minutes later, the timer goes off. The cake is done! Jenna grabs her pot holders and takes the metal pan out of the oven. She notices the oven mitts are warm as she puts them back in the drawer. “Time for frosting,” Jenna thought to herself. She opens the frosting container and uses a butter knife to spread it on the cake. Jenna immediately notices that the frosting is becoming thinner and is starting to melt down the sides of the cake. “Oh no! I ruined it!” Jenna cried and started to worry. How would she fix this? She tried to take off what she could of the runny frosting and it didn’t look so bad. She’ll try again later. Jenna decides she needs a break before decorating the cake. She cleans up the kitchen and start to makes lunch. She puts a pot of water on the stove and waits for it to heat up. Once it is boiling, she puts in the pasta and starts a timer. Ten minutes later, she puts her pasta in a glass bowl. “Ouch!” She yelps as she tries to pick it up. She gets a towel to hold while picking it up again. After a relaxing lunch and a long nap, Jenna tries to decorate again. The frosting doesn’t melt! Jenna decorates the cake with flowers and pretty designs. Her mom will love it!
