  1. Week 3 April 26-27 A Day

  2. A few years ago, NASA started working on some “Crazy” Engineering! What are a few things humans need in order to live on another planet?

  3. BREAKING NEWS!!! Last week - NASA DID IT!

  4. Rotation and Revolution I can describe patterns of motion of the galaxy, Sun, Earth, and Moon. I see, I think, I wonder

  5. Vocabulary - Google Doc Rotation Revolution Orbit Axis Tilt

  6. Rotation The spinning of the earth is called rotation. It takes the earth about 24 hours, or one day, to make one complete rotation.

  7. What is another example of rotation?

  8. Revolution The earth is moving around the sun this is called a revolution. It takes a little over 365 days, or one year, for the earth to make one full revolution around the sun.

  9. Orbit An orbit is the path of an object around a particular point in space, for example the path the Earth takes around the Sun.

  10. What are other examples of Revolution?

  11. Discovery Ed - Rotation/Rev Movement - remember to open in Classlinks. https://classlink.discoveryeducation.com/learn/videos/e921e572-4129-4f76-9507-eaea58b78824/

  12. Orbits in our Solar System: Click on the orbitals. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/resources/2516/nasa-at-home-videos-for-kids/

  13. Earth’s Movement: Rotation vs. Revolution Graded Assignment

  14. 6pts

  15. 2pts

  16. 2pts

  17. Week 3 April 29-30 B Day

  18. Seasons I can explain the causes of the seasons. Stem Values - Design/Systems If a day is 24 hours, why does the amount of sunlight vary throughout the year? What types of motion and patterns occur between the Earth, moon, and sun?

  19. Warm up - Quick Write 3 minutes Why is it hotter in the summer than in the winter where we live?

  20. Axis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BklbwyvOGBc

  21. Tilt Tilt is the angle between a planet's rotational axis at its north pole and a line perpendicular to the orbital plane of the planet. The tilt affects how much Sunlight hits the Earth.

  22. BrainPop and Review Key Ideas Here... https://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/seasons/

  23. Why do we Tilt? But what caused Earth to tilt? Long, long ago, when Earth was young, it is thought that something big hit Earth and knocked it off-kilter. So instead of rotating with its axis straight up and down, it leans over a bit. By the way, that big thing that hit Earth is called Theia. It also blasted a big hole in the surface. That big hit sent a huge amount of dust and rubble into orbit. Most scientists think that rubble, in time, became our Moon. As Earth orbits the sun, its tilted axis always points in the same direction. So, throughout the year, different parts of Earth get the sun’s direct rays.

  24. X X X How does the “Tilt” of the Earth affect the Seasons? Why? X Use the RED X. Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9MU4TouzII

  25. The TILT of the Earth causes _______________ . When a specific area (N or S hemisphere) is tilted TOWARDS the sun, it is receiving ________________________ , but when it is tilted AWAY from the sun, it is receiving ________________________ . However, the same amount of ___________________ is released from the sun year round. So, indirect light feels colder because that same amount of energy (heat) is spread out over a larger area. Seasons Review SEASONS DIRECT SUNLIGHT INDIRECT SUNLIGHT ENERGY (HEAT)

  26. Check for Understanding Google Form - 5 questions

  27. Why are plants greener in the summer? The plants are greener in the summer because theres more sun and it helps.

  28. Small Group Activity Why Do We Have Seasons? http://d3tt741pwxqwm0.cloudfront.net/WGBH/npls13/npls13_int_seasons/index.html
