  2. INITIALLY… • In the beginning of this Design Thinking Project, students were assigned to conduct an interview on a boarder in Raffles Institution (RI) to find out what needs the boarder requires and what worries he has. • For our group, we found out that our interviewee, Soh Kuan Wei from 3L, indeed has many worries regarding his stay in RI boarding. We found out that most of his worries are all regarding his room. The problem that we are going to address in this presentation is the issue regarding sleeping time with his room mate.

  3. INITIALLY… • And so, at the start of our project, my group and I were quite frantic as to what furniture we wanted to design, because the deadline was not too far away and we had lots of discussion to do. • At first, we came up with THE BED DESIGN. Bed + Railings + Pillow Ladder Study table with light + Chair + Drawers

  4. INITIALLY… • Despite it saving a lot of space, we realised that this was not a BIG idea. It was just a modified idea from what is available at IKEA. The light at the bottom of the bed would heat up the bed, and that would make sleeping uncomfortable. And so, we came up with the BTB design.

  5. the BTB (Back-to-back) Clothes closet + = Bookshelf Clothes closet + Bookshelf BACK-TO-BACK

  7. INITIALLY… • One of our purposes of making our design was to ensure that, should there be any issues about sleeping time, 1 boarder could sleep while the other can study in the same room. However, despite saving space, the BTB still did not solve the sleeping problem. • Therefore, after much brainstorming, we came up with our final design, the SBS design.

  8. Final product: the SBS (Side-by side) Clothes closet ? + = Bookshelf Clothes closet + Bookshelf SIDE-BY-SIDE

  9. the SBS Clothes closet Guard rails for convenience of pushing Bookshelf

  11. How the sbs works • Basically, the way this product works is very simple. • Clothes closet and bookshelf joined side-by-side, the clothes closet has 2 large doors opening outwards to store clothes (folded or on hangers) and also has 2 drawers below the doors to store miscellaneous stuff. • The adjacent bookshelf, has 6 shelves that can be used to display stuff or store books for use. • The bottom of the whole furniture has 8 wheels, so that the user can slide it from one side to the other by guard rails that are attached to the floor.

  12. Uses • Saves space • Convenient to push • In boarding school: 2 of these can be used for 2 boarders in the same room • In boarding school: Blocks out noise and light when 2 SBS’s are slid to either end of the room (because the length of 2 SBS’s can cover the width of the room as seen in the floor plan) so that when one boarder wants to sleep and the other wants to study both boarders can have their way!

  13. The sbs guard rail system • If 2 SBS’s are required to be installed in the room, 4 railings are needed on the floor so that the SBS’s are movable!

  14. Goals • Our main goal of designing this piece of furniture was to ensure that both boarders in the same room have their way at night (in the sense that one boarder can sleep and the other can study), so that both boarders would stay in harmony throughout the 1 term period of their stay in boarding school.

  15. Hope you like our design! Thank you!
