  1. How to Prevent and Treat Dry Mouth Naturally Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a condition that happens when your mouth doesn’t produce enough saliva to keep it wet and healthy. Saliva is essential for your oral health, as it helps protect your teeth, gums, and mouth from decay, disease, and infections. It also helps you enjoy, chew, and swallow your food. Dry mouth can have various causes, such as lack of hydration, certain medications, radiation treatment, stress, aging, breathing through your mouth, snoring, smoking, and using recreational drugs. Dry mouth can lead to symptoms such as dryness, stickiness, bad breath, trouble chewing and swallowing, sore throat, cracked lips, and altered taste. To prevent and treat dry mouth naturally, you can try some of these home remedies: • Drink water often to keep yourself hydrated and moisten your mouth. You can also drink coconut water or juices to restore your fluids. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and spicy or acidic foods that can dehydrate your mouth or irritate your mucous membranes. Suck on sugar-free lozenges or hard candies to encourage saliva production. Pick citrus, mint, or cinnamon flavors that can boost saliva flow. You can also chew sugar-free or xylitol-based gum for the same purpose. Use a homemade mouthwash to calm your mouth and balance its ph. Mix 1 cup of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. Swish this solution in your mouth for a few seconds and spit it out. Rinse your mouth with water afterwards. Do this every three hours as needed. Turn on a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your bedroom or living room. This can help prevent your mouth from drying out at night or during the day. Apply aloe vera gel to your mouth to moisturize and heal your mucous membranes. You can use fresh aloe vera gel from the plant or buy a commercial product that is pure and organic. Apply a thin layer of gel to your tongue, gums, and inner cheeks twice a day. • • • • •

  2. Consume soft, moist, and simple-to-swallow foods. To improve the taste of your cuisine, add butter, sauces, or broth. Foods that can irritate your mouth or induce choking should be avoided if they are dry, hard, crunchy, or sticky. To avoid tooth decay and gum disease brought on by dry mouth, improve your dental hygiene. Use fluoridated toothpaste twice daily, and floss frequently. After brushing, rinse your mouth with mouthwash free of alcohol. • Dry mouth can be uncomfortable and affect your oral health and quality of life. By following these natural remedies, you can keep your mouth moist and healthy. However, if your dry mouth is severe or persistent, you should see your doctor or dentist to find out the cause and get proper treatment.
