  1. Character vs. Society • Charlie, Don, all vs. Les - try to make Les a scapegoat b/c Les looks at sky, didn’t come outside, etc. • Les and others vs. Charlie – Les tries to make Charlie a scapegoat b/c he kills Pete/ lights • Crowd vs. Steve b/c of ham radio

  2. Character vs. Character • Residents vs. each other – People = Monsters • Charlie kills Pete • Character vs. Self – all are afraid and their fear drives their actions

  3. Conflicts for Monsters Character vs. Supernatural Aliens caused the initial happenings in order to have people destroy themselves Character vs. Technology All things turn on/off by themselves People are afraid of Les because of his car starting and stopping

  4. Conflicts for Monsters Characters vs. Unknown All don’t know what is going on and cannot find a logical cause for the electrical and non-electrical problems

  5. THEMES FOR MONSTERS • There’s a monster inside us all. • Man can be his own worst enemy. • The mind is a powerful weapon. • Suspicion and prejudice can be as destructive as bombs - sometimes more. • Attitudes, prejudices, and thoughts can kill.

  6. If you live your life making assumptions and being prejudiced, it can lead you children and generations to come to do the same. (fallout) • Don’t let others make decisions for you - don’t follow others blindly.

  7. Literary Techniques Foreshadowing: Narrator says the monsters are coming Mob running at Goodman = bad things to come. Peter’s death foretells that others may die. Rock being thrown foretells more violence.

  8. Irony of Situation The people are the monsters. There are actually aliens, but the people never see them.

  9. Verbal Irony Steve says they should run a check on the townspeople to see who is human and who’s an alien. Steve says he talks to three-headed green men.

  10. Facts People saw flash and heard roar. Electricity is out. Battery-operated machines also don’t work. Cars are not running. Suddenly, some lights work and some cars run.

  11. Facts Les didn’t come out to see the roar and flash. Les has insomnia and is up at night looking at the sky. Steve has a ham radio.

  12. Theories Meteor Sunspots Electrical storm A spaceship Aliens hidden among townspeople No one can leave the block.

  13. Theories Les is an alien. Steve is an alien. Tommy is an alien. Charlie is an alien.
