  2. Passport Basic Training • Presentation Outline • Features • Physical description • Battery life • Device Operation • Position Reporting • Passport EP command • Question/Answers

  3. Passport - Features • Provide GSM/GPRS/GPS functionality for mobile asset monitoring • Up to three years or more of operation • Fully integrated – no need external antenna or power source • Wireless connection reliability • Superior GPS Sensitivity & Geo-fencing • Simplified Over the Air configuration & Provisioning

  4. Passport – Physical Description

  5. Passport – Physical Description • To deactivate the unit, press and hold the power switch, for three o five second. The LED will become solid red then go off. • To activate the unit , press and hold the power switch, for three o five second. The LED will blink 12 times within a 3 seconds period (battery voltage in highest range), the LED will blink on for one second, off for one second, then for one second (normal voltage range). The LED will then go off.

  6. Passport – Battery life • Using default configuration the life of the battery is approximately 1 year • Wake up one per day • Checks location ones per day • Factors that will be affect the battery life • Report frequency • Device temperature • Length of awake time • Atmospheric conditions • Device motion

  7. Passport – Battery life • The minimum time reporting values apply

  8. Passport – Battery life • Estimates battery life for a typical configuration with the device operating at room temperature

  9. Passport – Power Management • Design to minimize power consumption to maximize battery life • Use the microcontroller to control the power states • The microcontroller use the motion sensor and the GPS to determine if the devices has been moved. • The power state are: • Microcontroller Idle: lower power state, it is in idle waiting for time expired • Motion sensor: It is this state for few seconds while the motion sensor detected movement. If motion is detected the GPS is turner on otherwise the device returns to idle state. • GPS receiver: The GPS is turned on, acquires the GPS satellites and determine the current position.

  10. Passport – Power Management • The power state are: • GSM modem: the modem is turned on if the position report is needed. The modem registers on the GSM network, send the position to the server and listen for a period of the time for new messages from the server.

  11. Passport – Reporting Position • Send two type of positions: • Messages with GPS position information if the position is valid. • Message with PCELL information if the position is not valid. • Configured to periodically report its position using the following scenarios: • Static Asset Monitoring with time interval reporting • Static Asset Monitoring with time-of-day reporting • Basic Motion Monitoring • Mobile Asset Monitoring with pre-defined geo-fence (s) • Mobile Asset Monitoring with dynamic geo-fence

  12. Passport – Reporting Position • The reports can no be received at expected time for the following conditions: • Delay position reports: Environmental factors may cause a position report to be delayed • Extreme temperature • Marginal temperature • Low voltage • No GSM coverage: maximum 10 messages can be stored in the internal memory • Time of day reporting with RTC: The RTC is updated when the device get a valid position, if the device never got the valid position then the RCT will no be accurate then the reports will not be sent at the desired time

  13. Passport – Reporting Position • The reports can no be received at expected time • Date time reporting drift: The time between positions is a delta time interval since the last report, it is not included the time to gather the position data and register on the GSM network. Users should expect the timed reporting to have an additional 3-12 minutes of lag time between reporting • UDP packet lost in the network

  14. Passport – Time interval reporting • User sets time to reporting frequency (see the minimum values according with the temperature) • The schedule report time is not exact. • The device will send a 20000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 21000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix. • The delay add to each report is accumulative.

  15. Passport – Time of day reporting • Time of Day Reporting is used when a specific time, rather than an interval is required for reporting • Use the RTC time to determine the weekdays and time when the device should report. • The RCT time is updated when the device acquire the valid GPS if the device never get the valid GPS, it use 0 as a reference • The device will send a 20000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 21000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix. • The first report will not be synchronous to a real RTC time • The delay add to each report is not accumulative

  16. Passport – Time of day reporting

  17. Passport – Basic Motion Monitoring • The unit report based in the motion of the unit. • It is possible define the periodic report when the device is moving and the periodic report when the device is not moving • The motion sensor is only powered ON for a specific time interval and it is only during that time interval motion is being sampled • In stationary mode the device will send a 20000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 21000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix. • When motion is detected the unit sends a 25000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 23000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix.

  18. Passport – Basic Motion Monitoring • In motion mode the device will send a 20000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 21000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix. • When no motion is detected the unit sends a 24000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 22000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix.

  19. Passport – Basic Motion Monitoring

  20. Reporting with 1 predefined geo-fence • This service is designed to allow the device to determine reporting interval based on being inside or outside one or two defined geo-fence areas. • Send periodic report when the unit is inside of the geo-fences based on “inside geo-fence reporting interval” • Send periodic report when the unit is outside of the geo-fences based on “outside geo-fence reporting interval” • The unit will report the transition to/from being inside and outside the defined geo-fence areas • When the unit is going to inside to the geo-fence it sends a 30000 report with valid GPS.

  21. Reporting with 1 predefined geo-fence • When the unit is going to outside of the geo-fence it sends a 31000 report with valid GPS. • The periodic report (inside or outside of the geo-fence), sends from the unit will be a 21000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix or a 20000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix.

  22. Reporting with 1 predefined geo-fence

  23. Reporting with 2 predefined geo-fences • Apply all definition for reporting period with 1 geo-fence. • Only one geo-fence can be stored in the MSP, the geo-fence information is changed when the device has entered to the new geo-fence. • When the unit is going to of the geo-fence 2 it sends a 32000 report with valid GPS. • When the unit is going to outside of the geo-fence 2 it sends a 33000 report with valid GPS.

  24. Reporting with 2 predefined geo-fence

  25. Reporting with dynamic geo-fence • The dynamic geo-fence will be created on the location where the device stopped. • When the unit creates de first geo-fence it sends a 51000 report with valid GPS. • The periodic report (inside or outside of the geo-fence), sends from the unit will be a 21000 report if the GPS can get the valid GPS fix of a 20000 report with GSM Parted Cell (PCEL information) if the GPS can not get fix. • When the unit is going to inside to the geo-fence it sends a 30000 report with valid GPS. • When the unit exist of the geo-fence and it detects not motion then it creates the new geo-fence and sends a 50000 report with valid GPS. • If the device detects a new position outside of the geo-fence with out motion, it sends a 20000 report and 31000 report and enters in recovery mode.

  26. Reporting with dynamic geo-fence • If the devices is in stationary and the GPS is invalid and the last know location is outside of the geo-fence then it sends the 32000 report and the two last locations were in the same location, the new geo-fence is created and sent the 52000 report.

  27. Reporting with dynamic geo-fence

  28. Passport - EP commands • The external processor command include: • CFGI – Configuration inside the active geofence • CFGIP – Configuration inside the active geofence in powered mode • CFGO – Configuration outside the active geofence • CFGOP – Configuration outside the active geofence in powered mode • GFNC – Configure geofence • GPC1 – Configure GPIO1 • RCFG – Configure reporting behavior • SAV – Save configuration in Flash File System • TCFG – Configuration timeouts • UTCW – Configure time of day bases position reporting • RSTR – Restore device configuration
