  1. Lesson Three: Searching for a Patient • At the end of lesson three, you will be able to: • Search for a patient using various search methods available in eKiDs PowerChart • Locate a patient by name, medical record number (MRN), or a combination of other demographic information

Let’s Meet Dr. Cuffie • As we work within PowerChart in this chapter, we thought you might like to shadow Dr. Cuffie. • Dr. Cuffie has recently accepted a position at CHKD and has not worked much with PowerChart. • Dr. Cuffie’s first patient is Sunshine Sparkle a four year old admitted for asthma. • Dr. Cuffie would like to check Sunshine’s chart for prior history before interviewing her mother.

Finding a Patient’s Chart • After Dr. Cuffie logs in, she can click on the Patient menu on the Organizer toolbar and select Search to open the Patient Search screen. • Dr. Cuffie can search for a patient using any of the available fields below: • Name (full or partial) • MRN (Medical Record number) • FIN (Financial number) • SSN (Social Security number) • Birth Date • Age (enter age range) • Gender

  4. The Most Direct Search • Dr. Cuffie types Sunshine’s MRN into the MR number field and… • Sunshine’s name appears in the top section of the screen in the list of matching patients. • Remember the MR# is the fastest and most direct way to search for a patient.

  5. Patient Encounters • The bottom portion of the Patient Search screen lists all encounters the selected patient has had at CHKDHS. • The current or most recent encounter appears at the top of the list by default but can be resorted by clicking on the column headings. • To open up details of a specific encounter, double click on the target encounter.

  6. Other Search Criteria • Other Search Criteria Include: • Financial Number (Account Number) • Social Security Number • Full or Partial Name • Doe,Gene • Doe,Gen (standard search, known as 3,3) • Doe,G

  7. Other Search Methods • If you have built a patient list, you may select your patient from the list by double clicking on their name. • This action will open the patient’s chart. Additional information on Patient Lists can be found on Kdnet at: http://kdnet/education/informationservices/tutorials/ekids/PatientLists/default.asp

  8. Additional Search Methods • You can search for your patient by entering their name or medical record number in the search box on the tool bar. • You can also search for your patient by • clicking the binoculars on the tool • bar to open the patient search window.

  9. The Recent Button • A list of the last nine patient’s charts you opened will be available by clicking the Recent button on the tool bar. • You can reopen a patient’s chart on the list simply by clicking on their name.

  10. Multiple Patients Listed If multiple patients are listed in the matching patients portion of the screen, review listed characteristics to help select the correct patient such as: • Gender • Date of Birth • Age

  11. Patient Deceased • If your patient is deceased, you will receive the following message upon selecting your patient. This message will only display once the Deceased field has been set to “Yes” in a patient’s record. • To continue to the patient’s record, select OK. You will be able to view this information in the Patient Information tab also.

  12. Lesson Three: Review • You discovered that by selecting Search from the Patient menu on the toolbar the Patient Search screen will display. • You determined that you can use a variety of known demographic features and search methods to search for a patient.
