English Language – things you can do to help! • Reading non-fiction. • When you are reading a newspaper or magazine, look for articles where the journalist voices a strong opinion. • If possible look for moral issues like stem-cell research, euthanasia etc. (R.E.) • Ask your children to read any interesting articles you find and then ask them questions about the issues raised in it. • Ask them to identify the purpose of the article, the audience it is aimed at etc. Full details of suitable questions are in the booklet you have been given.

  17. English Language – things you can do to help! • Writing non-fiction. • When reading magazines and newspapers, look for different types of text – letters, adverts, articles etc. Ask students to identify the key features of these different text types. • Leaflets would also be useful if you spot any at the supermarket, Doctor etc. as this is a text type that is often used in the exams. Full details of additional tasks can be found in the booklet you have been given.

  18. Supporting Private Study. • For both English Language and Literature: • Active study is best. • Planning exam responses • Writing quotations on plans from memory • Writing practice paragraphs under time pressure.
