  1. Quick Write What do authors do to makes readers want to keep reading their works?

  2. “We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck.” What predictions about the setting can you make? What makes you want to keep reading?

  3. “When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy.” What predictions about the narrator can you make? What makes you want to keep reading?

  4. “I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975.” How does the setting hook the reader? What do you already know about the narrator?

  5. “He told them he loved them. Each and every one of them. He spoke without notes but chose his words carefully.” Considering the book name and the quote, why is this hook surprising? What are you thinking about?

  6. “This is what I remember. My lips were cut. I bit down on them when he grabbed me from behind and covered my mouth. He said these words: “I’ll kill you if you scream.” I remained motionless. “Do you understand? If you scream, you’re dead.” I nodded my head.” Why is the imagery intriguing? What is good about it? What makes you want to keep reading?
