  1. Minor Prophets,Major Message Obadiah Part II Our Current Series at Living Water Pastor Brett Peterson

  2. “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” --Psalm 63:1

  3. Obadiah…background • Gen. 25-22-26 – Jacob & Esau struggle • Gen. 25:29-34 – Esau sells his birthright • Gen. 27:41 – Esau seethes over Jacob’s deceit • Gen. 32:6 – Years later, Jacob returns & meets Esau; all goes well. • From then on though, the Edomites assisted all the nations who came against Israel.

  4. Num. 20:14-21 – Edom refuses Israel passage upon exodus from Egypt • 2 Sam. 8:13-14 – David brings Edom into subjection • 2 Kings 8:20-22 – Edomites revolt under Jehoram

  5. God protects and comes against everyone who comes against His People. In fact, the wrath that will be poured out on the earth in the last days is because of what those people did to Christians!

  6. So, when does the wrath of God occur?Rom 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, (seventh seal – trumpet judgments)This comes at the end of the sixth seal, when the wrath is about to begin…Rev 6:16 and they *said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; Rev 6:17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" The wrath begins at the breaking of the seventh seal. This is the ‘trumpet judgments, and the last trumpet starts the ‘bowls of wrath’.

  7. Why does the wrath come?Rev 6:9 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; Rev 6:10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?" Rev 6:11 And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also. It is not a judgment that leads to repentance, it is penalty for sin!

  8. Rom 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, Rom 12:19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

  9. Eph 5:5-6 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Messiah and God. (6) Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

  10. Luk 21:34 "Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; Luk 21:35 for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. Luk 21:36 "But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." • Alert – “to be sleepless, that is, keep awake” • Eph 5:14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you." • Eph 5:15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, • Eph 5:16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.

  11. This will be a judgment on those who mistreated the believers and refused to repent – they took the mark of the beast. Rev 14:7 and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters." This is the ‘hour’ we will escape: Rev 3:10 'Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing (or judgment), that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.Rev 14:8 And another angel, a second one, followed, saying, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all the nations drink of the wine of the passion of her immorality." Rev 14:9 Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, Rev 14:10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

  12. Rev 6:15 Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; Rev 6:16 and they *said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; Rev 6:17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" • Edom represents the nations and people of the world that come against God’s people. • This is why God will totally destroy Edom. They are wise in their own eyes, proud, and they despise God’s people!

  13. Edom thought she was untouchable, but pride comes before a fall. (vs. 2-9)

  14. Edom&Israel • Jacob and Esau! • “the elder will serve the younger” • Esau “sold his birthright for a single meal” (Heb. 12:16) • Reconciled, they bury their father • Gen 25:30 and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.

  15. The Ancient “King’s Highway”

  16. Hostile Relations through the Centuries • Edom’s hostility after the Exodus (Num. 20:14-21) • Subjugation by King David (2 Sam. 8:13-14) • Revolt against King Jehoram (2 Kg. 8:20-22)

  17. Obadiah’s Charges • Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever. On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them. (Obadiah 10-12)

  18. You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble. You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor look down on them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster. You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble. (Obadiah 12-14)

  19. What is the message of Obadiah to Israel and to Edom?

  20. Obadiah’s Message Concerning Edom • Edom, along with the nations, will be judged for its arrogance. • “The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. (Obadiah 15)

  21. Oba 1:3 "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?' Oba 1:4 "Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD. Oba 1:6 "O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out! Oba 1:8 "Will I not on that day," declares the LORD, "Destroy wise men from Edom And understanding from the mountain of Esau? • They put their trust in their houses, their wisdom, their funds, their secret treasures, and their own strength rather than in the Lord God Almighty! • Where do you put your trust this morning?

  22. You may have heard of Petra…

  23. From Brown University Archeology Dept. • According to tradition, in ca. 1200 BCE, the Petra area was populated by Edomites and the area was known as Edom ("red"). The Edomites controlled the trade routes from Arabia in the south to Damascus in the north. Little is known about the Edomites at Petra itself, but as a people they were known for their wisdom, their writing, their textile industry, their engineering and water management, the excellence and fineness of their ceramics, and their skilled metal working.

  24. Wadi desert on the way to Petra

  25. The Djinn blocks : These are the first sign that you are approaching something special. Also called God rocks

  26. The entrance – the siq

  27. The siq – the narrow Passage leading to The treasury.

  28. Nitches were carved in the walls of the siq for their god’s to be place there

  29. If you look carefully, this niche has a god block with a crescent above it. • This is most likely where Muslims • Adopted the crescent from…

  30. The Treasury

  31. From the treasury, looking back at the siq – the entrance

  32. They ran the pips along the cliffs surrounding the city. These clay pipes have tapered ends, something we modern people only figured out in the last two hundred years • Analysis of the system indicates exploitation of all possible water resources using management techniques that balance reservoir storage capacity release with continuous flow pipeline systems to maintain a constant water supply throughout the wet and dry seasons of the year.

  33. Oba 1:17 "But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. Oba 1:18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken. Oba 1:19 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah the Philistine plain; Also, possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead. Oba 1:20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, Who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Will possess the cities of the Negev. Oba 1:21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the LORD'S.

  34. Oba 1:17 "But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. (1917-1973)Oba 1:18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame(2000); But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken. Oba 1:19 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah the Philistine plain; Also, possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead.(2000-current) Oba 1:20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, Who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Will possess the cities of the Negev. Oba 1:21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the LORD'S.

  35. Joseph’s Tomb (House) Burned * OC Register , Sunday - Oct. 8, 2000. Arabs tore apart and burned Joseph’s Tomb. It was a shrine, house, tomb, compound & synagogue. Obodiah 1:15-18 An end times prophecy - ‘Joseph's house will be a flame’ The idea is that it would be burned, and it infers it will be a catalyst for end time events. Israel's Defense state that Palestinians can not be trusted with the Temple Mount because of Joseph's Tomb! -Obadiah 1:18 As you may have heard, the Moslems burned Joseph’s Tomb. In Obodiah we are told that in the last days, when the nations are about to be judged, Josephs Tomb would be a flame. I find it very significant this event took place. The word in the Bible for tomb in this passage can also mean ‘house’. See below. Also, in that same passage it says Jacobs house will be a fire (different word than flame), and Essau’s house a stuble. Palistiinians are Essau’s house, Israel is Jacob’s house. So, we have Essau’s house (Palistine) starting and feeding the flame (Josephs Tomb) and the fire (the lack of peace in Israel)! All of this in the last of the last days!

  36. Are you like Esau today?Self reliantBitterProudTrusting in wealth rather than GodDriven by your appetite rather than led by the SpiritSelling out your birthright for temporary pleasureIf so, today is the day to get right with the Lord!Today is the day to surrender all to Jesus!!

  37. A.W. Tozer said this:“If we surrender our hearts to God we may expect a wondrous enlargement. And who knows what He can do if we take our hands off and let Him work?” The Root of the Righteous, 130. “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” --Psalm 63:1Today, I surrender all you to You oh Lord!
