  1. CQC Regulatory Approach Changes CLoudoc

  2. The CQC is changing how it regulates hospital services. It is moving to a single assessment framework, with new powers to assess integrated care systems and local authorities. Its new strategy strengthens its commitment to ensuring health care and social services provide safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and encourage service improvements. Its purpose as a regulator won't change but the way it is carried out will be different. They have an ambitious strategy, which sets out 4 themes: People and communities will focus on people's needs and experiences and on what's important to people when they access, use, and move between services in their communities. They will work in partnership with the people using services to build better care around them.

  3. Smarter regulation: The government will use smarter, more flexible methods of regulating services by providing up-to-date information and ratings. By targeting resources in this way, they will be able to target resources where the greatest impact will be made. They won't rely on on-site inspections to assess the quality of services, because they become more intelligent and data-focused. They are building digital platforms to integrate the data they hold, enabling them to act in a more targeted way. They will make it easier for services to work with them. Safety will be ensured through learning. Organisations will prioritise learning and improvement across health and social care. Assessments of safety will have a sharper focus. Insights and learning around safety will be shared. Where services fail to act on safety issues, organisations will use their powers to act quickly and take action to keep people safe.

  4. Accelerating improvement: They will encourage continuous improvement by being clearer on the standards they and the people using the service expect. They'll work in partnership with services and promote innovation and research to help improve the quality of care. The new strategy will look at how care is provided to improve outcomes for people and reduce inequalities in their care. The government amended the Health and Social Care Act to give the Care Quality Commission oversight of integrated care systems. The new proposals also mean that the CQC will inspect local authorities' duties under the Care Act. The CQC plans to roll out new elements of its approach in stages, working with a small group of providers. A new provider portal should be operational by the end of the year, with January 2023 set to commence the full rollout of the CQC's new way of regulating.
