  1. Research Problem Previous work: Developed, implemented and assessed Application-Based Service Learning (ABSL) pedagogy. Combines 5 high-impact educational practices, including novel research and service learning, in a single course. Problem: We don’t understand how all the elements of ABSL pedagogy work together: particularly the combination of novel research with service learning.

  2. Research Question • Is there a synergistic effect of coupling novel research with service-learning, as it occurs in ABSL courses, on students’ perception of the benefits of their: • Novel research experience and/or • Service learning experiences?

Alignment of Research Question and Methods Is there nr/slsynergy affecting student perceptions of nr/sl benefits? • Course eval. open-ended questions: Q re: Perceptions/attitudes about nr experience  code any reference to sl affecting benefits from their nr experience Q re: Perceptions/attitudes about sl experience  code any reference to nr affecting benefits from their sl experience • Building Themes of any benefits of nr affected by sl & vice versa • Embed results from Building Themes into an Open Choice Model or Likert-scaled synergy survey to directly identify the factors that influence students’ perception of benefits of nr affected by sl & vice versa
