  2. Aims The aim of today’s session is to get you focused on your area of investigation and to have a provisional but detailed action plan in place. It is hoped you will now have more of an idea of what the unit is about so you can articulate your personal goals.

  3. Learning Outcomes Learning Outcome 1, plan a local investigation By the end of this session you will have: • selected 1 area of investigation; • generated a hypothesis and five research questions; • produced a provisional action plan; • identified 5 realistic personal goals; and • started reflective journals for • yourself • your group

  4. Area of Investigation • Title • Hypothesis • Five research questions at least one of which should give your investigation a local focus • SWOT analysis of your area of investigation

  5. Potential Sources of Information Identify sources of information you will use to answer your research questions and test your hypothesis: • web based • paper based • human

  6. SWOT Analysis

  7. Provisional Action Plan: • Who? • allocate tasks based on skills and qualities and other factors you consider important • What? • How ? • When? You will need to record how you carried out this process in your group reflective journal and also record your own feelings in your individual reflective journal.

  8. Try to ensure your plan includes SMART objectives:

  9. Working Methods • There is an expectation that you will meet outside classroom contact time to do some of the planning, reflection and carrying out of primary and secondary research but the bulk of the work will be done in class contact time. • I will need to meet individuals and groups regularly to monitor progress and to provide guidance. • For some of the sessions would you prefer to work in a Learning Street or a room in the Learning Resource Centre or somewhere in College less formal? • For health and safety reasons you will need to report to me at the beginning of the session and at the end.

  10. How did today’s session go? Do you think your investigation will make you a more: • successful learner? • confident individual? • responsible citizen? • effective contributor?

  11. Next week • Feedback on provisional action plan • Finalise area of investigation • Finalise action plan • Identification and review of resources
