Strategies to Reach Your Goals Goals should be set to achieve your vision and mission, with a 3 to 5 year timeframe. • Strategies should be set to achieve your goals, with a 6 to 18 month timeframe. • You should achieve SMART when both goals and strategies are combined. • You will prioritize your strategies based on probably impact and resources required. Evaluating Strategy: SMART • Specific: The strategy should identify a specific action or event that will take place. • Measurable: The strategy and its benefits should be quantifiable. • Achievable: The strategy should be attainable given available resources. • Relevant: The strategy should be aligned with other efforts and needs. • Time bound: The strategy should state the time period in which it will be accomplished. Although either the goal or strategy statement may themselves not address all the criteria, when the goal/strategy combination is considered together it should address all the criteria.   25. Goal 1: Establish more effective communications across multiple platforms with key stakeholders. (I=H,R=H) Strategy 1: By May 1, 2019 develop a survey to identify membership communication preferences. Contact using all platforms. Analyze results by September 30, 2019 (I: H, R: H) Strategy 2: By January 2020, have RLS’s Communication Committee establish a sustainable communication policy and best practices for handbook, informed by the survey in Strategy 1 (I: M, R: L) Strategy 3: By June 1, 2019, establish a consistent presence on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. Identify specific responsible people. (I: M/H, R: L) Strategy 4: By December 31, 2019 update RLS website with accurate, current information and move to WordPress. Find a webmaster and 2 associates.   26. Goal 2: Increase membership by 20% through new member acquisition and current member retention. (I=H,R=H) Strategy 1: Piggyback on the communications team survey to establish what RLS members see as membership benefits, value and ideas. See Goal 1 for timeline. Determine RLS preferred benefits (+3 months from Goal 1) (I: H, R: M) Strategy 2: Establish a Membership Affairs Committee with new volunteers to communicate the value of ACS membership to key stakeholders via visits into the local community and social media (+1 year from Goal 1) Visit all stakeholders with presentation (January, 2020) (I: H, R: H) After discussion of resources, in light of NERM 2020 preparations, it was decided to start in 2019 with development of a 1-page value statement and target distribution of it at NERM and other RLS events. This “soft serve” approach will then be followed up with further effort after NERM. American Chemical Society

  27. Goal 3: Increase membership engagement by 5% of all members (by 2019 count) for RLS-sponsored activity (I=H,R=M) Strategy 1: By September 30, 2019, establish active YCC/WCC/SCC Committees. (I: H, R: H) Strategy 2: By March, 2020 Each committee will host at least one event. (I: H, R: H) Strategy 3: In 2019, increase participation of members at targeted local section meetings through publicity and personal invitations. (I: H, R: L/M) After discussion of resources, in light of NERM 2020 preparations, it was decided to ask the YCC, WCC, and SCC committees to focus on at least one event for NERM.   28. Goal 4: Create innovative interdisciplinary programs that foster unique collaborations within the chemistry community (Chem-UNITY). (I=H,R=H) Strategy 1: By June 30, 2019, form a Programming Committee that completes ACS leadership course “Collaborating Across Boundaries.” (I: M/H, R: L/M) Strategy 2: By September 30, 2019, Programming Committee identifies 3 specific possible collaborations. (I: H, R: L) Strategy 3: By July 31, 2019, develop a list of volunteers from academe and industry willing to mentor (by field). Once established communicate this is available. (Add to survey?) (Focus on event?) (I:H, R: M/H) Strategy 4: By the fall lecture, enhance the outreach of the emerging technologies seminar by streaming, recording and live tweeting to reach a broader audience including the small business community and those that can’t travel. Strategies 1-3 were delayed, based on current resources. However the idea of the Collaborating Across Boundaries course will be presented to the NERM programming group. American Chemical Society
