  2. THE CARA Cara is the centre where asylum seekers stay for a maximum of 6 months, waiting for the refugees status. Some datas: • 368 guests now • 5094 guests passed • Main nationalities: Somalia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Tunisia = The so called “first reception” has been ensured

  3. Abderrahim, from Somalia 25-year-old young man from Somalia has been in Italy for 7 months. He’s living in Cara, sees his future in Italy. Would like to find a job and a home, is on the waiting list.

  4. OUT OF CARA As a refugee, people have some rights BUT Are them granted? Deep reasons: no national law frame to concretely give them rights What municipality does and can do?

  5. RIGHTS GIVEN OR TAKEN The occupation of Ferrhotel: • When: October 2009 • By whom: 40 somalis • Administrative situation

  6. Husayn, living in Ferrhotel Has been living in Bari for 6 months: first 3 months in CARA, then in the city, now in Ferrhotel. Speaks fluent English, unemployed.

  7. SIDE EFFECTS • Media: from coverage to pushing factor: Barilive role. • “War between poors”: occupiers has make ferrhotel a somali congregation

  8. OFFICIAL REFUGEES FROM ERITREA • Two men from Eritrea, living in front of the Ferrhotel, because they’re not allowed to go in. • Around 25 people spend their nights on the street, in front of the Ferrhotel.
