Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Indian Removal Act of 1830” 1 1 In 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which gave president Andrew Jackson authority to negotiate removal terms with tribes of the American South. The idea that whites should populate the continent is called manifest destiny.   9. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Choctaw Removed in 1831” 2 2 The territory of the Choctaw was in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Various treaties had been reducing their lands since 1801, but the 1831 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek took away their remaining territory.   10. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Choctaw Removed in 1831” 2 2 3,000 to 6,000 died along the journey because of freezing temperatures.   11. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Seminole Removed in 1832” 3 3 The Seminoles inhabited parts of Florida and had been involved in conflicts since 1814.   13. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Creek Removed in 1834” 4 4 The Creek Confederacy was located in Georgia, and many agreed to move to Indian Territory. About 20,000 moved to Alabama.   15. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Chickasaw Removed in 1837” 5 5 The Chickasaw were not given land in Indian Territory, but were paid instead. The amount was about $12,000,000 in today’s dollars.   17. Trail of Tears Comic Strips “Cherokee Removed in 1838” 6 6 The Cherokee were the largest of the five tribes, coming from several different states. They were forcibly removed from their lands in 1838.
