  2. Do Now (Page 141 -Left side) • Listen to the music as you come in. • How would you describe this music from the 1920s? • How does it make you feel? • What do you think of when you hear it?

  3. New Unit: The 1920s“The Roaring 20s” • Today’s Objective: “I will listen to music and observe images from the 1920s to decipher the social, political, and cultural climate of this post war decade.”

  5. Big Paper Activity • Get in groups of 3 and go to a paper • Spend 3 minutes at each poster. Quietly discuss and write questions, comments on the poster. (the bell will ring every 3 minutes to rotate) As you observe and listen. Think about: • What does this image tell you about the 1920s? • What is interesting to you? • What questions do you have?

  7. Social Tensions and Normalcy • Economic recession after WWI • Racial Intolerance, rebirth of KKK • Red Scare- Anti-Communist fears • Anti Immigrant laws and sentiment • Goal for “normalcy” back to pre-WWI America

  8. Jazz and Prosperity • Music and entertainment (movies, jazz, sports) • Economic prosperity & consumerism (buying luxury goods like cars) • Bootleggers and speak-easies/night life culture emerges

  9. New Identities • Women assume greater role in society • More freedom, sexual freedom • African-Americans and the Harlem Renaissance (rebirth) create the “New Negro”
