  1. 2 ما وظيفة جهاز المودم ؟؟ عند استخدام المودم في تبادل البيانات، فإنه يأخذ البيانات الرقمية من الكمبيوتر، عبر بوابة تسلسلية، ويحولها إلى إشارات تشابهية (وتسمى العملية modulation)، ثم يرسلها عبر خط الهاتف، فيستقبلها جهاز المودم على الطرف الآخر، ويعيد تحويلها من إشارات تشابهية إلى رقمية (demodulation)، ويعطيها للكمبيوتر المستقبل عبر بوابة تسلسلية، أيضاً. وبالتالي يعمل المودم كمحول رقمي-تشابهي/تشابهي-رقمي (أو MOdulator/DEModulator)، ومن هنا جاءت تسمية MODEM.
