  3. Admiral Miklos Horthy Admiral Miklos Horthy took over Budapest in 1920. He was later overthrown when Hitler came into Czechoslovakia. Budapest had an uprising in 1956. The people gained some more freedom from the reign of Communism.

  4. Adolf Hitler Adolf Hitler came into power and began his route of the persecution of the Jews. His actions created the worst event in history called the Holocaust. This major persecution involved the death of over 6 million Jews and non-Jews.

  5. Jews • The Jews were treated like animals while at the concentration camps. • Women had their head shaved and been given rags to where. • They were separated from the man and children. Most never saw their family ever again. • They were also put into showers that would either pour water, acid or gas. The victims never knew.

  6. Auschwitz Auschwitz was the largest and most famous concentration camp. It alone killed 3 million Jews and non-Jews. Panni’s sister Boszi, her daughter and parents were taken to Auschwitz.

  7. Economy After being conquered by the Soviet Union, their economy slowly decreased. They gained their freedom back in 1956 but were later conquered again by the Soviet Union. But this time they used tourism to increase their economy. The beautiful country was again stable.

  8. Popular Books From left to right: The Plough and Pen by W. H. Auden, Souvenirs de tempts des morts by Andre Bridden and Verdun by Péricard. Popular books that passed time while either in hiding or for pleasure purposes.

  9. Education These are the four Friedmann girls, from left to right: my sisters Piri Deri, Rozsi Schwarz and Bozsi Spiegel and Panni. The Friedmann girls went to a regular school with other children and were bothered for being Jewish. A specific school is never mentioned.

  11. Panni and her three other sisters married. Two of the husbands died from forced labor and another died from sickness. Panni was born on 1915 in the small town of Eger in Northern Hungary. She was the fourth and final daughter. Panni’s sister Boszi, her daughter and parents were taken to Auschwitz. Panni now lives in Budapest, Hungary. She joined the Communist party and lived to see her children marry. 1915 - - 2007 Panni’s Husband survived the forced labor. And they both moved away to hide from the Nazis. They lived in a yellow-star house and were later moved into the Ghetto, Hungary. Boszi was the only survivor of her family that left Auschwitz. But she never saw her daughter or parents again.
