  2. What is Capacity Building? The process of strengthening your agency’s ability to effectively carry out its mission.

  3. Fifty-eight percent of CAFB Partner Agencies say they are doing the best they can with their current resources but would like to do more. • Use seven categories of capacity to assess your agency’s ability to do more: • VISION • STRATEGY • TEAM • FOOD & FUNDS • ORGANIZATION • SYSTEMS & INFRASTRUCTURE • CULTURE

  4. 1 - VISION • Community Assessment • What are the critical needs in your community? • Who is addressing them and how? Create alliances with other social service agencies, share resources and know where to refer clients for other needs. Chances are, all agencies could benefit from collaboration, and working together, you can bring positive change to your community!

  5. 1 - VISION • Energize your mission! • Does it clearly define the purpose of the agency? • Are the agency’s activities consistent with the mission? • How long is it? Keep your mission clear and concise – one or two sentences is all you need. Live your mission every day!

  6. 2 - STRATEGY • Create an Action Plan • Where do you want to go? • How will you get there? STEP 1: Develop a problem statement. STEP 2: Set objectives. STEP 3: For each objective, define at least two action steps – strategies.

  7. 2 - STRATEGYSAMPLEPROBLEM STATEMENT: To build strong leadership

  8. 3 - TEAM • Define roles and incite passion! • What roles are needed for your agency? • How will someone in that role know what to do? • Who oversees all of this? Written position descriptions may include: position title, purpose, specific responsibilities, qualifications/skills needed, supervision, time, training. Build a board of directors that meets regularly, provides leadership and oversight, and solicits funds from the community.

  9. 4 - FOOD & FUNDS • Organize your funds with a budget! • Know the cost before you buy. • Relate the budget to specific results. • Use computer software to manage the program. • Increase your funds with fundraising, grants and community events!

  10. 5 - ORGANIZATION • Internal communication • Who’s working for your agency? • How do they know what’s going on with the agency when they’re not there? Assign a few team members to be in charge of internal communication. This role is essential for staying organized and promoting a culture of togetherness among your team.

  11. 5 - ORGANIZATION • External communication • Who needs to know about your agency? • How do they know about your agency? Build relationships with local media. Use news releases to communicate with media. Identify target audiences in your community and build relationships. Communicate with the community.

  12. 6 - SYSTEMS & INFRASTRUCTURE • Energize your systems! • Is your agency always prepared for a monitor? • Does your agency run efficiently and effectively? Three elements are essential to a great agency: (1) Customer Service (2) Record Keeping (3) Posting Information

  13. 7 - CULTURE • Fire up your team! • Keep your mission active and brand it within your team. • Extend your spirit into the community. • Encourage team input. • Treat clients with respect and make them smile. • Celebrate with your team and appreciate their work. • Advocacy • Stay updated on news relevant to issues you are passionate about. • Use the “Take Action” center of the CAFB website.

  14. What Can You Expect as a Result? A more efficient, effective and satisfied agency. A more supportive and knowledgeable community. A stronger response to needs that arise in the community.
