Rule 1Positions of Players • Teams consist of nine players throughout game, except a team may finish with eight. • Head coach and captain responsibilities include: 1) provide UIC with lineup – all substitutes must be listed; 2) informing all players of ground rules. • At time of pitch, all players must be on fair ground (one foot), except catcher (inbox). • Players may change positions at any time, except pitcher until 3-1-1 and 3-1-2 are met.

  3. Rule 1 The Field • Diagram 2 p.7 • Neither team’s players can warm-up in the other team’s on-deck circle. • Extension of the dugout is on the outfield side and for both teams. • Media is prohibited in live-ball territory. • Games played on non-regulation field cannot be protested.

  4. Rule 1Bats, Balls & Gloves • Bats may be wood (single, solid) or non-wood. • Non-wood bats must have grip made of cork, tape or rubber that extends a minimum of 10 inches and maximum of 18 inches from the knob. • -3 (weight to length difference) 36” max. • Non-wood bats must be BBCOR.50. No stickers/decals. • Bat warmers/coolers or the warming/cooling of a bat is illegal. • Ball is 5-5.25 ounces and 9-9.25 inches in circumference. • Ball COR shall not exceed .555 • Minimum of 3 balls having the NFHS mark shall be provided to start game.

Rule 1Bats, Balls & Gloves • Gloves shall be worn. • Catcher’s mitt may be any size. • Pitcher’s glove may not have white or gray. • Fielder’s glove may be a maximum of 14” from heel to highest point, 8” from bottom edge of webbing farthest from the thumb to the outside of the little finger edge, 5.75 inches across the webbing.

  6. Rule 1Bats, Balls & Gloves • Loose equipment may not be on or near the field. • IF LOOSE EQUIPMENT INTERFERES WITH PLAY, THE UMPIRE MAY CALL OUTS, AWARD BASES OR RETURN RUNNERS BASED ON HIS JUDGMENT AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE PLAY.

Rule 1Uniforms • Uniforms should be same color. • Caps and shoes are required. • Sleeve lengths may vary, but each individual must have same length and cannot be ragged, frayed or slit. • Pitchers may not have white or gray sleeves. • Pitchers cannot have items on hands, wrists or arms that are distracting. • Numbers on back are required, none identical.

  8. Rule 1Uniforms • Each item of the uniform may have only a single visible manufacturer’s logo of 2.25 inches. • Each item may have an American flag (2 x 3 in.). • Memorial patches (4 sq. in.) by state adoption may be worn.

  9. Rule 1Player Equipment • Batting helmets (NOCSAE) are required for batters, on-deck batters, runners, retired runners, players/subs in coaches boxes, non-adult bat/ball shaggers. If player removes helmet, warn coach and eject next offender. • Face guard may be attached. • Catcher’s equipment includes: helmet (NOCSAE), mask, throat protector, chest protector, shin guards and cup. • Catcher’s helmet/mask combination must have full ear protection and may be one-piece or multi-piece design.

  10. Rule 1Player Equipment • Players warming-up the pitcher at any location and in the crouch position must have helmet, mask, throat protector and cup. • Defense may wear helmet with non-glare surface. • Hard items (casts, splints, etc.) must be covered with 0.5 in. padding. Applied Appliance Form required. • Prostheses authorized by state are allowed. • Jewelry may not be worn (except religious or medical).

  11. Rule 1Player Equipment • NOCSAE logo and warning statement must appear on all protective equipment. • Prior to the game, head coaches must verify to UIC that all players are legally equipped. • Questions concerning legality of equipment will be resolved by UIC.

  12. Rule 1Violations, Warnings, Penalties & Awards • Lineup cards without substitutes listed – no penalty. • At TOP, fielder is not on fair ground – Penalty: Illegal pitch (2-18-1). • Game on non-regulation field by mutual consent of coaches – no protest allowed. • Loose equipment interferes with play – Penalty: umpire may award outs, bases, return runners based on his judgment and circumstances of play.

  13. Rule 1 Violations, Warnings, Penalties & Awards • Non-adult bat/ball shagger not wearing helmet – warning to coach and individual. Next violation results in not being allowed on field. • Deliberately removing helmet while in live-ball territory and ball is live – Penalty: Warning to coach. Next violation results in ejection. • Failure to wear proper equipment after umpire order – Penalty: Ejection. • Ball touched by illegal glove/mitt discovered by umpire, coach or captain of team on offense - choice of result of play or the award (8-3-3 a,b,c). Must be replaced. Foul fly caught is nullified and treated as foul ball, unless taking result of play.
