what is sel

What is SEL?

SEL is a process for helping children and even adults develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness. SEL teaches the skills we all need to handle ourselves, our relationships, and our work, effectively and ethically.

Professional Growth System

ELA Shifts:

Shift 3-Teachers are patient, create more time and space in the curriculum for close reading

Shift 4-Students have rich and rigorous conversations which are dependent on common text

Mathematical Practices:

#3-Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

#6-Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others.

A highly effective teacher…

creates an environment of respect and rapport -2a.

allows students to monitor their own and peers’ behavior, correcting one another respectfully. 2d

provides frequent opportunities for student self-assessment and for students to make active use of that information. 3d

Intentionally creates an opportunity for student-led discussions, where students make unsolicited contributions. 3b

Data describing “challenges” from the CTP:

  • It was very difficult for many students….. I think some gave up.
  • While students were engaged – the process was comparable to pulling teeth! Many wanted to give up too soon.
  • Kids getting really irritable after so many questions.
  • I think the hardest thing was the students were not used to analyzing text this way. They are used to simply writing down answers without knowing what it means.
  • Struggling students trying to withdraw.
  • For them, staying focused for that length of time.
  • The first time is always tough, as the kids are doing something new and they are uncomfortable and apprehensive about new activities.
