  6. Declaration of Independence • List of grievances - against the various acts by the king - justification for rebelling • Identified basic Rights - Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness - promotes equality

  7. Revolutionary War • Response to the Declaration - colonies want freedom - self-governance • Long and expensive war - colonies were short resources - Britain far from home • End result, a new country

  9. A new government • Articles of Confederation - drafted before the war ended - ratified by the states - went into effect in 1783 • State power - retained sovereignty - loose association • Central Government - weak - lacked control

  10. Weaknesses of the Articles • Law enforcement to states - no president • No national court • States independent - boundary disputes - trade issues • Poverty and reconstruction - currency issues • No unity - appeared weak
