  1. 3D Vision Research in CUHK Professor Ngan King Ngireceived the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Loughborough University in U.K. He is currently a Chair Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Thousand Talents Program (千人计划) Chair Professor at the University of Electronic Science and Technology China in Chengdu, China. He holds honorary and visiting professorships of numerous universities in China, Australia and South East Asia.Prof. Ngan served as associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, Journal on Visual Communications and Image Representation, EURASIP Journal of Signal Processing: Image Communication, and Journal of Applied Signal Processing. Abstract In this talk, the research work on 3D vision system and subjective quality evaluation of visual signals conducted in the Image and Visual Processing (IVP) Laboratory of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will be discussed. The 3D vision system makes use of our patented head pose estimation and tracking technology to accurately track the head movement in a 3D space. An application of the work would be free-viewpoint video system using RGB-D cameras. Subjective visual quality evaluation plays an important role in the design of high-quality visual signal processing applications such as video coding, video streaming and image retargeting. The procedure of subjective quality assessment of visual signals leading to the design of full-reference and near-reference quality metrics will be outlined. Lastly, the subjective testing procedure of retargeted image quality assessment will be described.
