  1. How to Prepare English for CLAT 2016 Without Wasting Time

  2. How to Prepare English for CLAT 2016 • Before you start with the preparation of English section of CLAT, you must first have a fair idea about what is actually expected in the exam. This will avoid wasting time on unnecessary efforts. We agree that there is no set pattern of CLAT, but still the syllabus is broadly defined; stick to it. • Types of questions asked and expected in English Section of CLAT(Common Law Admission Test) • Tips on how to prepare English

  3. Actionable tips on how to Prepare English for CLAT: • We can divide the preparation of English in to 3 sections namely: • Vocabulary • Reading Comprehension • Basics of Grammar

  4. To practice English on a daily basis you can buy a good book on Objective English like: • English is easy by ChetananandSingh • RS Aggarwal

  5. Grammar • A good book for Grammar to be referred is Wren & Martin. This will help you clarify your concepts. While preparing for Grammar, make notes side by side. Pay definite attention to the topics you are weak in, learn the basic rules of Grammar and apply the same to solving practice exercises under topics like verbs- their formation and usage, active passive voice, articles and so on. • Brushing up your basics will help you with frequently asked questions in CLAT English Section on: • Spotting errors • Sentence correction • Cloze test • Fill in the blanks

  6. Vocabulary • Focus on enhancing and expanding your vocabulary on routine basis and from a reliable source.  By sources we mean newspapers, textbooks and exam focused wordlists available online. We won’t suggest you to follow ‘Word Power Made easy’ by Norman Lewis because it can be really time consuming. • You need to adopt a holistic approach towards learning English instead of following the stereotypical ways like mugging up word lists. Everyone does not have the patience to do that!

  7. This vocabulary building will help you with questions related to: • Synonyms • Antonyms • Spellings check • Idioms and phrases • Foreign language words • Relationship of words

  8. Foreign language words (and sometimes idioms) need special attention as you are most likely to not know them. For these you surely need a word bank. Here are a few examples: • Bona fide- authentic; genuine; sincere and honest • “This is a bona fide offer” • Charge d’ affaires- a diplomat who takes the place of an ambassador or minister when he is absent from his office • “As the Foreign Minister is sick, Mr. Verma is the present charge d’affaires.”

  9. Reading Comprehensions • You should develop a regular reading habit to be able to solve Reading Comprehensions. For practicing comprehension passages you must first solve the ones asked in the previous years’ CLAT papers.  This will give you a basic idea of the difficulty level. • There are mainly 5 types of questions asked from reading comprehensions: • Questions on the information given in the passage • Suitable title for the passage • Meanings of a legal phrase used in the RC • Synonlyms/Antonyms of words used in the RC • Summary of a short paragraph
