THE BEST SNORKELING SPOTS AROUND SICILY CLASSIC SICILY
Overview Sicily is one of Europe's top snorkelling destinations, thanks to its rugged coastline, crystal-clear waters, and some of the Mediterranean's oldest marine reserves. The region has hundreds of snorkelling spots scattered around the islands, the vast majority of which are easily accessible from the shore. Snorkeling among schools of sea breams, tropical-colored wrasse, moray eels, and small dusky groupers is common in Sicilian protected waters, just a few metres from the beach.
Zingaro Natural Reserve The first natural reserve in Sicily, Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro, located west of Palermo, is a must-see when visiting the island, where you can see rare plants and over 39 bird species. The area is remote and quiet, with numerous hiking trails available to provide panoramic views of the surroundings. Zingaro, with its 7 km of protected coastline, is an excellent location for snorkelling in Sicily. There are numerous caves and grottos where you can find algae and sponge-covered rocks, as well as sea creatures.
Tonnara di Scopello If you're in Sicily then don't miss to add Tonnara di Scopello in your luxury private tour of Sicily. Even during the busier seasons, when more people are present, the water is easy to access and clean after descending on a slightly steep path. The beach has a variety of rocks in the water, which adds to the natural beauty of the setting. Many couples visit this location because of how beautiful it looks and because of the breathtaking views beneath the water. Snorkelers will find a lot to see in the shallow water, as well as a lot of fish near the stacks.
Egadi Island The Egadi archipelago in western Sicily, along with the island of Lampedusa, has one of the most beautiful seas in Sicily. The archipelago of The Egadi Island consists of the islands of Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo, as well as the islets of Formica and Maraone. There are numerous opportunities to grab your mask and fins and enjoy some truly stunning snorkelling in one of the five islands. Capo Grosso is one of my favourite snorkelling spots in Levanzo, where sponges, corals, sandbanks, Posidonia colonies, and many fish of all races and sizes coexist.
Islands Of The Cyclops When visiting Catania to hike Mount Etna, don't forget to visit Isole dei Ciclopi, also known as the Islands of Cyclops! This beautiful location has an intriguing mythology-related story: the Cyclops Islands were thrown by Polyphemus against Odysseus, according to legend. The rocky coastline makes this area ideal for snorkelling in Sicily. This nature reserve, with its basalt rocks, calm winds, and clear water, is ideal for observing marine life while wearing goggles. There are numerous cafes and restaurants nearby where you can get a bite to eat if you get hungry.
Ustica Ustica, Italy's first marine reserve, is a popular snorkelling location on the island of Sicily. Fans of the sport adore the breathtaking seafloor. Scoglio del Medico's basaltic rocks form a landscape of deep grottos, while Secca della Colombara's gorgonias and sponges paint a beautiful caleidoscope. Sail to Grotta dei Gamberi, a 40-meter-deep horizontal inlet teeming with the famous Ustica shrimps. During the summer, tourists can snorkel with marine biologists from Palermo University at Cala Sidoti and learn the secrets of the Sicilian seabed from them using underwater earplugs.
