  1. Application for Classroom Movies & TV

  2. Activity Learning Objective Through the critical review of movie and TV clips, students develop a deeper appreciation and understanding for how the REFLECT competencies undermine or support leader behavior.

  3. Activity Description This activity helps students build knowledge and appreciation for the REFLECT competencies. Students review sitcom and dramatic clips from the small and big screen. TV and movie footage provide the raw material that students then use to identify character competency strengths and situations that reflect the REFLECT competency “underdevelopment.” A final paper is the culminating activity.

  4. General Overview for Students • Example – Chris watches TV. • Process • Distribution of Possible TV Shows/Movies (optional) • Student Ongoing Work • Mid-Assignment Discussion • Paper Submission • Final Class Discussion

  5. Activity Modification or Challenge Opportunities (if applicable) • Modification • Faculty select video clips, screen for students on regular basis, and facilitate class discussion • Challenge • Students required to identify clips that only align with their competency development priorities and strengths and write an accompanying paper with this more narrow focus. • Students assume the role of TV/movie director or screenwriter, offering commentary on his/her production/character decisions. • Students research and write a paper on “Hollywood’s” portrayal of leadership competency.

  6. Activity Grading Considerations • Alignment of movie/TV clip selections with competencies • Final paper research thoroughness and “smart” content focus • Engagement during class conversations
