  2. HUMAN INGENUITY Why and how do we create? What are the consequences?

  3. Classical Indian Civilization • The Aryans developed the Caste System to help provide order and stability to society. • This system also gave expression to the basic Hindu beliefs such as reincarnation, karma, and dharma.

  4. The Caste System provides social order. • Each caste had distinct roles in society and the caste guided members in issues of occupation, foods eaten, and marriage.

  5. DISCUSSION • Discuss the following with your partner: • How did the Caste System is create order? • Do you think the Caste System is fair?

  10. India’s Most Famous Poems • The two most famous poems are the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. • The Mahabharata is the longest poem ever written. It contained about 88,000 verses and had several authors. • Later classical writings in Sanskrit focused on drama, poetry, or scholarly articles.

  11. Gupta Dynasty • Most learning in India occurred during the Gupta dynasty. • During this time, many advances were made in math and science.

  12. Indian Math • Indian mathematicians developed the idea of zero and a symbol to represent it. • They also explained the concept of infinity which is something without an end. • Gupta mathematicians created the symbols 1 to 9 that we use today. • Early Indians also invented algorithms which is a series of steps to solve problems.

  13. Indian Science • They mapped the movement of stars. • They understood the earth was round and revolved around the sun. • They also had an understanding of gravity. • They came up with the idea of atoms well before the Europeans. • In medicine, they could set broken bones, and treat illnesses using herbs.

  14. Indian Art & Architecture • Most of the art and architecture centered on religious themes and expression. • There was an emphasis on Hindu temples and statues. • Buddhists also build massive mounds called stupas.

  15. WRITING • Write 2-3 sentence about the following: • Why do you think most art had religious themes?
